I need ot install a couple of files that replace files belonging ot anohter installed product. The files I replace contain customizations that my users will need. I know this is not the best thing to do but I have no choice ... it is a long story. At install time I need to back up existing files and place my files in to the right subdirectory. At uninstall time, I want to replace my files with the files that were there originally (from the backed up files). I am using Windows basic project. Can anyone recomend a way to have this done?

I guess I need ot explain why I am asking. I've asked our install writers to update the the ISUS code from v3.0 that we were using since Septemebr of last year to V4.5. They did and I can see that UpdateServiceAgent.exe that is laid down on disk is at v4.5. However, when I do "Check for Updates" the way our end-user would I get a dialog with no text on it. When I right mouse cloick on the window title and select "About". It tells me that this is Update Service V3.0. I want to understand why the text is not displayed and why is it still reporting V3.0 when we are shipping v4.5 agent. Where does the text fro this dialog come from? Does it get integrated when our install developers include ISUS redistributable code or does it come from the ISUS website?

I am aware of hte merge modules but what I was really lookgn for is a list of files that need to be redistributed and, hopefully, an explanation of what each file does.

Is there a set of instructions some place that details what ISUS 4.5 files need to be redistributed as part of the application to enable the application for the Update Service. I am also looking for instructions on what needs to be done on hte target system (register DLLs etc.) as part of enabling an app for the Update Service.

I think you are talking about a round gage on the "Start Page" of the ISUS website. I always wondered about what this gage really shows. The text under the guage says that it is reporting "Total Users". Your previous posting seems to imply that it is reporting "Unique Users". And, me, I am not even sure that I understand what "Total Users" and "Unique Users" really means. The way I interpret this guage is that it is supposed to show the agregate number of unique users for all products and versions that ever checked for updates for our products. In other words, if the guage shows 75,000 then I know that our software was installed on 75,000 or more unique workstations and exactly 75,000 users on these workstations checked for updates at least one time (but probably more). Is this the right way to interpret this number?

I have to agree, reports is the best feature. If only they were well documented as to the value they can bring. On the subject of reports, what happened to the "Machine Profile" reports? I need to be able to report how many of our cusotmers are usign WIndows 95, 98, XP, 2000, 2003 etc. I also need to know if they have 64-bit or 32-bit OS.

Brad, thanks for the explanation. It really helps. Kelly, I am looking forward to seing soem better docs on reporting. It really is a shame that so much effort went in to engineering and creating these great reports but the very simple explanation of what insight these reports can provide got neglegted.

I am really strugling with ISUS reports. Basically, I am having a really hard time understanding the meaning of "Unique Users" and "Total Users". The documentation is of absolutely no help. The description for Total users talks about Unique users etc.

I am really lost as to what to expect from the Update Service. I go to the website and create a new message, test it out and make it active. Then I sit and keep checking for updates expecting my newly published message to start appearing. Hours go by but no message. What is the expected time period between the time the message is published on the Update Service web site and the time it appears on the user machines?

Many of our customers are running on Windows Server 2000 and 2003 machines. When they do a check for updates they get a message: Your current browser security settings prevent the proper operation of the Update Service. The Update Service relies on ActiveX controls and Active Scripting, which are enabled under the default browser security settings. I've experimented with adding http://updates.installshield.com/ to the "Trusted" Internet Explorer zone but it does nto help. What specific IE settings does one have to enable to get rid of this message?

Every promotional message we publish directs our customers to some website. So, when we publish a promotional message I have to create and upload a custom HTML page that opens up a browser window and simply redirects customers to the web page. It would be a whole let less work if I could simply specify the URL of the final destination web page where people can learn more about the contents of the promotional message. Is there a way to specify a URL for the “Learn More” button instead of creating a web page that redirects customers?

I am puzzled by the relationship between the Update Service and the Update Manager control panel applet. The "Check for updates to these programs" list in the Update Manager only shows programs that belong to InstallShield and does not show other programs on my computer that are registered with the ISUS. For example, I have our own application that is registered with ISUS but it does not show up in the list. Is this by design or did we not do something that would make our program appear on this list?

I installed Demoshield 8 and InstallShiled 10.5 and my Update Manager now has al of the text apearing as it should. While I am happy that the problem is fixed it woudl be nice to know how it got fixed. Did one of these products install a newer version of the Update Manager control panel applet? About dialog box shows version as "InstallShiled Update Manager 3.0"
