The Unknown status is used for licenses when inventory data cannot be used to determine the compliance status of the license. There are two main reason explained below
1. Some licenses, such as Microsoft Server Core and Microsoft Server Processor, require details (number of cores or processors) from hardware inventory; but not all inventory tools include these details (Microsoft SMS or SCCM prior to the 2012 release did not provide information on cores). In the absence of these hardware details, license compliance cannot be accurately calculated, and (unless it is already in breach) is given a status of Unknown. To correct this, identify the computers linked to this license that are missing the necessary hardware properties, and set the values manually until you can change to an inventory tool that provides all required data.
** We only record a problem and mark the license as incomplete in the cases / license types when it is relevant to reconciliation. For MS Server Processor it needs threads and physical processors.
2. Licenses that have no applications associated with them will usually have a status of Unknown. You can change this by identifying the installed software and linking it to the license; or as a short-term workaround, you can allocate the license to specific computers and select the Count allocations as always installed check box on this property tab
