I was using [BUILTIN]. I will try it with BUILTIN instead. I wonder why it worked for the 3 folders then?

Yes, choose the Path Variables view under the Media folder. You will find all of your path settings in there. Just click on the table on the right to change them.

I am using the permissionsbutton on the properties of folders to try to give all users full permission on these folders. I have done this for 14 folders. 3 of them get the correct setting, the other 11 do not. I have the domain set to [BUILTIN] and the user set to Users (that is our all users group). There is nothing common on the 3 that get set. One is directly under C:, the other 2 are under Program Files. Any idea how the same exact permission settings dont produce the same results?

If you right click on the component that will install the file and select properties you can check the "Never overwrite" box. That will make it so that if that file is already there it will not install, if it isnt there, it will install. Click the HELP button on that property screen for more info.

Under "General Information" go to the "Summary Information Stream" and change the property "Require Administrative Privledge" to NO. That will let any user install your app. However, I cannot say if your app will install correctly because with Vista permissions for certian area of the PC have changed.

Please ignore this post. I have learned that the installation WILL be run as administrator so this error does NOT occur.

I am getting an error 1925 when the .msi is run. I am logged in as standard user. I have to get this .msi to work as a standard user (Vista). Is there a way to temporarily raise the users privilege so that when the .msi is run they have admin rights?

One last stupid question : If I set the permission on a parent folder do all the subfolders get that same permission or do I have to set it on all the folders seperatly?

You can also do this by using the Project Assistant. The last page, Build Installation, has 4 choices, one of them is single MSI package. Just check that box then click the Build Installation button.

I am trying to set the Directory Permissions for some folders I create to full control. I found where I can do this : it asks for a Domain and User name. I want to know if I can use a group name in the User name field. Is there some variable [] that I can use? Sort of like [LogonUser]?

When I use component wizard to install a folder (with all the files and subfolders) It correctly designates .dll's and .exe's as key files but it then makes the last non dll\exe in the folder a key file as well. I was under the impression that when there is no .dll or .exe file in a folder then the folder itself should be the key so that if the folder is removed all the files in there will be restored. Am I under the wrong impression here? If the last file is the key file then only that file will be protected, no? Sorry if these are dumb questions but I am new to windows installations (used to work solely in UNIX). Any help and or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Did you use the Component Wizard to add this as a seperate component? I have successfully added and registered 2 different dll's in the system32 folder using the component wizard. FYI, best practice methods say you should set these files to permanent so they dont get removed on uninstall.

I dont want to misinform you about the differences between these options. Have you tried using the KnowledgeBase they provide? You can find access to it under the Help menu. Just search for those words. I am sure they detail them in there.
