Regarding FlexNet Embedded:
The CONTAINER_ID host/device ID type is not meant for nodelocking since it is easily changeable.
But it is great for a license server to distinguish between one running container and another. Use the license server to enforce the total number of containerized clients that can be run at one time. i.e. license server can not serve licenses from a VM and don't use CONTAINER_ID for a license server. Best choice is to use a Cloud License Server if you have that option available to you.
You may need to adjust the borrow-renew interval to get the right balance of quickly freeing up a license if the client goes away vs having the client frequently check with the license server.
Revenera has plans to include CONTAINER_ID host id type to FlexNet Publisher in a future release.

Walt

Ravikiran I just noticed you asked your question on the FlexNet Publisher forum. I want to clarify that I was referring to FlexNet Embedded. FlexNet Publisher does not natively support .NET Framework or .NET CORE. Only C libraries are provided for FlexNet Publisher.

I would add while FlexNet Embedded supports .NET CORE, that there is a separate SDK for it.
If you only have access to the FNE .NET XT SDK, you will need to purchase the FNE .NET CORE XT SDK.

Hi lcfernandez,
I'm afraid that what you are looking for is not available. The license server Report Log is the only source of data that would accurately provide the data for the report you are looking for. There is no API for a non-software publisher to use get at that data. Only FlexNet Manager for Engineering Applications can access the Report Logs.
You submitted your question to a software producer forum for FlexNet Publisher so @aparashar1 responded as if you are a developer. His suggestion to use server diagnostics would only apply to ESRI or other software producers.
The only FlexNet Publisher document available to software consumers is the FlexNet Publisher License Administrator's Guide. You can get that from your software vendor.
BTW, FNP v11.13 is very old and went out of support in 2017. It will be completely sunsetted in Nov this year.

Hi Andy,
End users do NOT have to provide their identifiable information in order to use the web reg key. The reseller could do the registration.
You should make your resellers a partner account type. This will allow you to grant them a bulk entitlement and register it to an anonymous (to you, but not to them) end customer account. The partner or the end customer can then activate without providing details. The device will be owned by whatever account name the partner provides when registering with the web reg key. The end customer, just gets an activation code and activates, they would have not ability to view entitlements or licenses.
You could do a similar process without web reg keys, but requires the partner account to use the Transfer Entitlement Line Item function in the FNO customer portal.
See the attached screenshot of a partner owned entitlement in the customer portal prior to Transfer.
While your original question seems simple, there are many subtleties to it, like does the end customer need ESD? Would some resellers share end customer info? Do reseller's end customers turn into or are at the same time direct customers? Who owns the device? Who is providing support?
It is very typical for a software producer that is providing product support to an end customer to REQUIRE the partner to provide end customer information. Just because a partner/reseller doesn't want to provide end customer info, doesn't mean they can't be convinced that it is to their benefit to provide it.
Let me reiterate, that if your "customer" wants to resell your software products, they aren't a customer but a partner.

Hi Andy,
If your "customer" is reselling your product, then they are really a Reseller (channel partner).
A common approach to addressing this use case that we call "make to stock"...
In FlexNet Operations, you can create Bulk Entitlements that will provide you a list of Web Registration Keys.
Provide the WebRegKeys to your partner for resell. They or their customer can use the WebRegKey as an activation code. Typically software producers want to collect end customer registration info, but if your agreement with your partner doesn't allow that, you can limit the reg info you collect. You have the option to bill your partner based on the number of activations over the last month, quarter, etc. if you can't get them to pre-pay for the WebRegKeys.
If the use case is more of a "make to order", then you can just create regular entitlements for your partner with activationIDs that they can re-distribute. All activations will look as if they belong to the partner.
Bulk entitlements and Web Registration Keys are covered in the documentation and online help.

This type of question should be directed to the software producer. In this case Tableau tech support.

ablihash,
You should contact the provider of your licensed compiler product about support for early return of a borrowed license.
This forum is meant for software producers using FlexNet Publisher to add licensing to their products.
Your question as an end user of a Flex-enabled product may find an answer here but it is less likely to be monitored by anyone with that type of experience.
I suggest you post your question to the FlexNet Manager discussion which is viewed by other end customers that may have similar experience and knowledge to share as yourself.

Hi Paul,
I understand that you are trying to understand the encoding of information in the FNE error string. I think you are more likely to find success getting an answer to your question by contacting Flexera Tech Support.
If you still want to explore using the community forum to understand the error encoding then maybe someone else can comment, but I do not believe there is anything in the product documentation about it other than the description of the FlcErrorRef struct and its related functions.
Maybe you've already figured out the problem with input parameter and the actual error message is now irrelevant, but if you still want to explore using the community forum to resolve the bad input parameter, it would help if you provided a code snippet or example of the function call that is throwing the error.

Are you asking this question as an end user that is managing a license server? If so, you should contact your software producer that provided the application to see if they support license borrowing.
If you are asking as a software developer working for a software producer that wants to offer license borrowing as an option to your customers thne you want to search for the keyword borrow in the FNP doc lib. Primarily in the FNP Programmer's Reference and in the License Administration Guide.
There are different methods depending upon whether you are using license file or trusted storage based licensing.

Halla pierre_olsson,
I think you may have posted in the wrong forum as it appears your company is using FlexNet Publisher and not FlexNet Embedded.
FlexNet Publisher was not designed for use over the web or in the cloud. It suffers from several limitations.
Eric's response regarding the use of FlexNet Operations and the Cloud Monetization API is the current recommended solution for your use case, but since you don't own FNO you probably don't have access to the documents he referred to. As suggested please contact your Flexera Account Manager if you have not already.

Hi Andy,
I'm not sure that this community forum is really able to support designing a solution from scratch.
I think you would be better off engaging with Flexera Consulting Services to review your objectives and requirements in more detail so that they can help you design a solution based on their experience helping other software producers. There is not a single best approach.
I don't recall if you are FNP or FNE and you didn't specify.
If you have access to FNO documentation, I suggest you look into Cloud Licensing Service (CLS) and the Cloud Monetization API (CMAPI). These are the primary technologies Flexera offers for SaaS/Cloud based licensing.

My guess is that there is a disconnect or mismatch between the on-premises components and the cloud ESD server. I installed FNO 2018R1 on my local machine and found a file called EmailTemplates.xml in <installdir> \release\flexnet-data\site\conf\service\EmailTemplates.xml. In my file it only lists templates relevant to licensing . If the ESD server is trying to access an ESD-based email template it may not be finding it.
File objects use the same update notification email template. I'm curious to know if you get exactly the same result setting up a file notification which would indicate whether the issue is with the template or with the download package.
Ultimately I still think you are looking at a support case for someone to follow the "links" and review logs/db. Things I can't really help with.

Hi ANewbacher,
Have you hear about Flexera's REST-based licensing API? Also know as the Cloud Monetization API or CMAPI.
This API was designed for cloud to cloud license checking. It does not require the SDK libraries, you can call it from any language that can make a REST call. It makes for a super light weight client, but requires back end functionality (FlexNet Operations and Cloud Licensing Service) to support it.
It's a great solution for applications deployed in a docker container.
Take a look at the FlexNet Licensing datasheet here:
https://www.flexerasoftware.com/resources.html?type=datasheet
Then contact your account manager for more information.
BTW, there is currently no good solution for nodelocking within a container. Everything is virtualized so there is nothing safe to bind to. I expect this to change in the future.

Hi Andy,
I understand you are using an On-premises edition of FNO.
I just tested in FNO Cloud 2019R1 and the notification was working. Here is how it should work...
When you are viewing the Download Package and choose to Notify, FNO should take you to a page where you can select Distribution List Options, basically filtering for who will get the notification. At the bottom it should say Email Template and list Default.
Next, you would not select send immediately. Click on blue Create button. It should take you to another page where you can preview the email. In the Email Content, you should see the same text as you have set up in your Update Notification email template. I'm attaching a screen shot of what it looks like. In my instance, the email content matches my template.
Next, at the bottom where it says send preview. Enter your email address and click on the blue Send Preview button to see if you get it.
Finally, have you checked the Administer->Sent emails to see if there is any record of your update notification email there? (Note the preview from above will not show up in sent emails).
Since you're not seeing any of that, then you may be running into a bug and need to open a support ticket. Those of us that monitor this board regularly don't have access to an on-premises fno instance.
