Any thoughts, anyone??? I've been told to figure out how to fix this problem, but it seems specific to this environment..I haven't seen this behavior on other systems.

That I understand, but we're not using a domain user here, we're using a local user. I've also been told that this system is in a Workgroup, not a domain. How long is too long though? I've seen pauses of a couple of minutes or so on some systeme, but I'm told that they've left it sitting upwards of 10 minutes w/no change in the installer (clicking in the titlebar results in ..Not Responding appearing.

We're trying to get a customer upgraded to the latest release of our prodcut. As part of our install, we display the SdLogonUserInformation dialog to capture user credentials to pass through to a service that we are installing--problem is that the install is seizing up and not proceeding. We are supplying a local user id and password, and launched the install on Win7x64 via Run As Administrator I've already tried validating that the Computer Browser service is running, not sure what else to look at. Please help!!!

I have an InstallScript project that is serving as the entry point for a series of installs to install our project suite. Is there a way that I can detect if the setup has been launched in "Run As Administrator" on Vista or later OSes.

I used the Pre-Requisite editor to create a new item, and supplied the necessary conditions (i.e. what file to look for, what exe or msu to execute, what platform, etc). For Windows Server 2008, Powershell has to be installed via the Add Features applet of Server Manager, so for my project I scripted a test for the file and prompted the user to install PowerShell before proceeding with the rest of the installation.

Do you have a something that you'd be willing to share? I need a consistent look/feel across all dialogs.

Regarding your 1st question, if you are including both 32/64bit pre-reqs for MSI 4.5, then you don't need to do anything special, the conditions are already programmed in so that if you're installing on 32bit, only the 32bit ones will be processed, and if you're on 64-bit, only the 64bit will be processed. I ended up authoring my own pre-requisites for Powershell. You should also probably add some script code to your setup for Windows Server 2008, as Powershell has to be added from the Server Manager.

I went away for a couple of days and checked a project in before I left. When I came in this morning, I opened the project with InstallShield, got the prompt to check it out like I ordinarily do, and went ahead and did some work on the scripting, did a build, saved my changes, and exited out. When I came back a little while later, the project is coming up in the title bar as being in read-only mode, even though the ism file is not flagged as read-only, and sourcesafe indicates that the file is checked out to me? What gives, and how can I fix this?

I have an InstallScript project set up with SdLogonUserInformation so I can capture the credentials for a service I am installing that requires windows credentials. We are testing in VMWare virtual environment with Windows Server 2008 (32bit), and the system is part of the domain. The problem I am having is that when I provide a set of valid Windows credentails (i.e. my own), I'm getting an error message back saying that the server could not be found. Anybody have any ideas?

I have an InstallScript MSI project that is wrapped in a skin for our product branding scheme. What happens though when the setup prerequisite screen comes up is that the default image of the PC shows up on the left-hand side and obscures the skin graphic. I have the DialogSetInfo (DLG_INFO_ALTIMAGE, "", TRUE) call at the start of the OnFirstUIBefore() event handler so that it does not appear in the main project, but is there a way to remove the graphic in the setup prerequisites dialog?

I'm not sure that DoInstall is appropriate in this case. You may want to use an InstallScript CustomAction to do this, and schedule it to occur during the Execute Sequence, and set the execution condition to Not Installed to ensure this happens only the 1st time the setup is run.

I built my own installer for SQL 2008 R2 Express..The good news is the IS already has setup pre-requisites built for MSI 4.5, PowerShell 1.0, and .NET v3.5 SP1, so you can go into the Prerequisites view and select them. Note: If you're deploying on Win2008, PowerShell won't install via the Pre-reqs becuase it is considered an operating system feature and must be added via Server Manager. IS its own pre-req for SQL 2008 R2 Express, but I'm not all that familiar with how to set it up properly. I used the sql 2008 R2 express installer and management studio installer programs as components, and executed them in the Feature_Installed event with the command-lines arguments I needed.

The way I did it is that I packaged up the SQL2008Express and ManagementStudio installers into a setup package, used the pre-requisites to distribute all the necessary stuff (MSI 4.5, .NET 3.5 SP1, PowerShell), and used InstallScript to execute a command-line installation of the two packages so I could pass through the desired arguments (instance name, sa pwd, etc.)

It's going to depend on how the uninstallation information is stored. RegDBGetUninstCmdLine's 1st argument is the key under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall - in setups built with older versions of IS (before 6.0), the would be the appname, in all later versions, its the GUID. So you would be running three tests: nResult = RegDBGetUninstCmdLine(szKey1,svResult); if nResult = 0 then // Uninstall Product 1 endif; nResult = RegDBGetUninstCmdLine(szKey2,svResult); if nResult = 0 then // Uninstall Product 2 endif; nResult = RegDBGetUninstCmdLine(szKey,svResult); if nResult = 0 then // Uninstall Product 3 endif; NOTE: svResult is a combination of both the app name and any command-line arguments, so you may need to split the string up into 2 parts to pass to LaunchAppAndWait/LaunchApplication. If any of these setups were built with IS, you'll want to include the /clone_wait parameter to ensure that the main installation does not continue until the called setup program finishes processing.
