Hello,
I have a question, if there is a possibility to trace "unused" software assignment eg. on vmware esxi.
Scenario: There is one physical host which is hosting several virtual windows servers. So I make asoftware assignment of eg. winfows server datacenter to this Physical server. Then all his childs are covered.
But when all those virtual servers are moved somewhere else, or uninstalled, the software assignment on that physical host remains, but it is no longer needed. Is there a way how to display those assignments which are no longer needed?
Thank you
Vlad

Hello Vlad,
regarding Windows Server DC I would like to ask why this is important as these products have to be assigned to a physical machine in your VMWare scenario. Additionally, an unused ESXi host would cause only licensing and operational costs without benefits.
But if you want to search for assignments without usage you could do a search on Software assignments for License Requirement (where = 0), export the list to Excel and filter your products (or do a special search with your product and License Requirement as query in Advanced Search). I have attached a screenshot to demo this. There are many ways to get such data (reports, adv. search, list sorting).
Hope that helps. 🙂
Cheers,
Patrick

Hello,
you should assign Windows Server DTC/STD to physical host, if there are any installed Virtual Servers running some appropriate version of Windows Server operating system. Othewise it is shown as a LMP Error. And when you assign Windows server datacenter to physical host, then it covers all childs which have Windows server Operating system.
But if those childs are removed, then the software assignment on physical host is still making license requirement.
You can use the software assignment section in spider, but it shows also software assignments on childs where license requirement is 0, because those childs are getting license from their physical hosts.
We need an information where is the software assignment making license requirement, even when there are no childs.
Thank you
Vlad

Hi Vlad,
I understand that you can get the results you are looking for with a report.
I don't have enough knowledge on report building in Spider (yet). We could look at it together or if its not your strengths either, perhaps a service consultant that specialises in Spider Reports may be able to assist. They may have one ready to hand.
Kind regards,
James Ellis
