Hi All, I have a small problem in displaying my application in the startup menu. I am using Installshield 2008 Basic MSI project to build a setup for my application. In the application information page, I am asked to enter the company name and other details. I have entered all the necessary details and followed all the steps to build a perfect setup. The setup is working fine. My problem is in the startup menu. In the startup menu, the application details are shown like the below format Start -->Programs --> Company Name --> Application Name --> Application exe I need a way to remove my company name from this. Is that possible. If so please help me to overcome that. I need a format like this Start -->Programs --> Application Name --> Application exe Awaiting the experts advice. Thanks in advance Warm Regards krishna:

Hi Mark, No, I havent found a solution for it. I have posted it in many forums but I am yet to get a reply in any of the forums. When i tried contact the Support team, they say that a Support plan must be taken for them to help us and it comes with a cost. Cant afford to ask the management or client to pay for the plan. Still scratching my head on this issue. Regards krishna

Hi, How does an upgrade works in the installshield ? Does it uninstalls the previous version and then installs the new version internally. I have a problem during the installation of my product into a machine that already has an older version of the application. When i run the setup file, it asks whether an upgrade should be performed. On confirmation, it starts installing the application. But when i try to run my application, i get an MSI file not found error. Below is the error that our client faces. A portion of the email our client had send. "I installed the new version but when I tried to start the application I got a message that the "TaskArchitect 2.msi" file could not be found" Please help Thanks in advance krishna kumar

InstallShield 2008

Hi All, I have a setup build in IS 2008. It is a basic MSI project. I store the product key in the registry. We keep releasing newer versions once in a month or so, which contains either fixed bugs or few enhancements. How do i retain the value written in the registry because on the Installation of the newer version results overwrites the registry value. The registry value is now empty. How do i check this. Also, is there any specific thing that should be considered while developing the setup so that it acts as both an upgrade version, if an older version exist or as a Installer if no version exists. Sometimes I face a peculiar error "MSI File not found" when trying to run the installer in the machine already having an older version. The Installation goes fine but when i try to execute the application, i get this error. I know i have asked too many questions but these are the problems that i face now and need a solution very badly. Also i am just a beginner when considering the experience i have using IS. Thanks in advance krishna

Hi All, Thank you all for the immediate replies that has been really helpful in my development process. Now i am able to remove all the files from the C:Program files folder. But i still find the folders alone remaining in the path. I would like to give you a clean picture of the folders created during installation. While developing the setup file, in the application information section, i give my company name and then my application name. When i more to the application files section, i find 2 folders created. Under the ProgramFilesFolder, i find a folder created in my company's name, and a subfolder in the project name. Inside this folder i add the exe and other application realated files. When i install, my c:programfiles looks like this C:ProgramFiles\CompanyName\Applicationname and the files inside this folder. Now the files are getting removed and the folder is empty during uninstallatiob but the folders remain intact. I hope i am explaining it in the correct way. Please help on how to remove the folders also that are created Thanks in advance krishna

Hi All, Thanks a lot. The post was really helpful. I had one of the component with its permanent property set to Yes. Now i am able to uninstall the folder also. But still i have a problem. If suppose the User starts using the application, the recently used files list are stored in the application path, i.e in the c drive program folder where the application files are installed. Now since a txt file resides in the folder, the folder does not get deleted. Is there a way that i can delete the created folder. Thanks in advance krishna

Hi, I am using 2008 professional edition to build setups for my application. We have already released a version and now releasing the next version. I build the new setup and have released the version. We tried testing in our machine, the Installer pops up with a message asking a confirmation for upgrading the application. After the process, the application works fine in my machine. One of my client came up with a peculiar error saying that after the successful installation, when he tried to run the application, "MSI file not found" error was raised. Can anyone help me out on why this happens as i am not able to reproduce the same error. I tried it in different machines in my organisation but it worked in all machines. The setup is a basic MSI project. Any help would be gratly appreciated as this issue is really sitting at the top of my head. Thanks in advance Krishna

Hi, I am using Installshield 2008 professional edition to build a setup for my application.Everything works fine. It is a basic MSI application. The Installation and the uninstallation are working fine. I have no issues with that. The only problem that i find is even after the application has been uninstalled, i still find traces of the application in the program files folder. I still find the folder of my application with few files in it. The registry cleaning and removing of the application are all fine. As i said, the only issue is, i still find the folder residing in my program files. Is there any way that i can remove everything that is related to my application while uninstalling. Looking forward for an early response. Thanks in advance krishna

Hi, Thank you all for your valuable reply. I would like to know whether i could get a documentation on how to do a major upgrade ?. Moreover the older version was build in InstallShield 10. Is it possible to do a major upgrade for that. I am working on IS 2008 and i have created a new project for building the setup. I have not used the Older version or upgraded that version to IS2008. I am very new to InstallShield as my area is quiet different from creating Installers. I am basically from the .NET product development team and i am working for a client in getting their product developed. This is actually an enhancement work that i am doing on the application with major changes like changing the registry where the product information are stored. How can i build a major upgrade ?. Will i require a to convert the setup developed in IS X. Since the GUID will be different for both the setup as both are two different setup projects. I think i am confusing a bit because i am confused on how exactly to proceed further. Sorry for the inconvenience. Awaiting your reply, krishna

Hi, I have build a setup file using IS 2008. It is a Basic MSI project. Now the Setup file is working fine and the installation of my application in the target machine is perfect. we have brought in a major change in our application. Till this time, the application was getting registered in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry but now we have changed it to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. So it was decided that the new setup will be installed to all our existing clients. Now the actual process that should happen during Installation of the new version is like this. 1. First check for the existence of the Older version. 2. If present uninstall the version. 3. Install the new version. I have written a program that checks for the existence of the older version and if present, it would uninstall the application. It is an .exe file. I decided to build a custom action to do this process. But I was not able to succeed in it. Please can anyone help me on how to build a custom action and also in which sequence it should work along with the location where the exe should be stored. Please let me know on how to run my exe before the Installation starts. I thought of another idea but i think it is not the rigtht way. I created prerequisite using this exe and this would fire b4 the installation starts. This option is working fine. I need advices from the IS experts and please do help me out. Waiting for an early response. warm regards, krishna kumar.
