I am still having trouble getting installshield to replace my app with the newer version. The users are having to uninstall the old version first. Here's what I want... - The installer should install normally if the program is not there. - The installer should upgrade the software if it's a newer version. - The installer should warn and make the user confirm if this it a downgrade from the currently installed version THIS SHOULD BE THE OUT-OF-THE-BOX default settings for InstallShield builds FOREVER. This whole "You already have a version of this installed" should never occur, or if the developer asks for it, there should be an "Are you NUTS?" dialog box to confirm it.

I have the Free LE version to use on my own projects. I know the idea of a free product is to entice you to buy the full product, and there is usually no support (other than community support) for free versions of anything. HOWEVER I have been sitting here for 3 days fighting this damn thing, the docs are incomprehensible to me, and the community (God bless you, seriously) though kind and usually helpful, takes way too long to respond, and half the time it takes a week or more to get it down to a workable solution. I can't just tell my client "The software is done, but hang on for a week while I figure out the Installshield build". Is there any way to - I don't know - get a REAL PERSON on the phone or something to help me figure this **** out in - say - a couple hours? Is there a support option like that? Because my experience with InstallShield LE so far is that it's cryptic, poorly documented, and fails frequently for no discernible reason. Not much of an endorsement for the paid product.

Since changing the Product Version was no help, I regenerated the Product Code. Now instead of whining about the program already being installed, it just installs a second one alongside. Maybe next time I'll try changing the UPGRADE Code.

Please see Upgrade Considerations for more information on creating upgrades. Sorry, that is not an answer, it's a manual. I am not looking to get a degree in Installshield, I just want a simple answer to my question. I read that page, and many others linked to it, but it requires foreknowledge of terms I don't understand. What I want is simple. Recognize my software (that it's the same package) Replace it. I never want to see the "Already Installed" message. No one on the planet wants that. So I figure there is some switch somewhere that I have to change to make this happen. I do not want a 25 day course where I determine what a "component" is and whether I added one. I want to recompile and test my project, build a new installer, and have my users update it. Easy. Or it should be.

I saw other threads here, but the help didn't help. Maybe I just need to know the NORMAL way to do an installer such that the OLD version is removed and the NEW version is installed. The posts I saw here seemed to say that changing the Version number would work, but no dice.
