I am trying to set the files in an upgrade install to "always overwrite" the existing files during an upgrade install. NONE are being overwritten. What am I doing wrong? Cheers, Don

How would I go about adding the uninstall of the previous version of my software from the target system to my my MSI project? It can obviously be done through the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, obviously, but I would like InstallShield to handle it as part of the install. I want to remove the old version before I install the new one to give the target system a very clean install. Cheers, Don

I cleaned up (deleted) a number of old InstallShield projects which I no longer need, or want. However, they still appear in the File menu list of recently viewed projects. When I try to view an existing project which I have kept, I get a series of messages about deleted projects. Is there a way to clear that history of recently viewed projects so that InstallShield no longer puts out meaningless messages? Cheers, Don

Hi Cary, The latest software is going on a CD (in a compressed format) whereas the previous release went onto a DVD in uncompressed format. I believe that the *.msi path probably has changed. If I included the previous release's .msi file in the original path as on the DVD, would that solve the problem of looking for the original .msi? Thanks for the info, Cary. Cheers, Don

During testing of an MSI project installation for an existing project, the following message appears: Please insert the disk: 1 This occurs only when I am using the new install to upgrade the currently existing application on an XP system. If I use Add/Remove Programs to remove the current version of the appllication first, the message does not appear. What causes this message to appear? Is it looking for the disk for the previously installed version? Is it possible to eliminate or bypass this message and have the install simply continue to perform the install?

I am trying to write an MSI InstallShield 2010 project which will set the proper permissions on a few folders. The problem is that Vista users are covered in the group "Everyone". As far as I know, no "Authenticated Users" group normally exists on Windows Vista. Our own corporate users, who use Windows XP are all covered in the group "Authenticated Users", but none of our corporate users are included in the "Everyone" group. If I try to set permissions for both "Everyone" and "Authenticated Users" in the install, it will fail on both operating systems since one group, or the other, will not be present on the target operating system. This will cause the install to fail and abort. Is there a way to set permissions for both groups conditionally based on whether or not the user groupo exists on the target operating system? Cheers, Don

Thank you very much for the information. I will check that out. I am using InstallShield 2009 Professional at the moment (soon to be 2010) with a basic MSI project. I am not using the Windows Installer directly, so based on what you have said, I should be able to get the permissions to append to the existing permissions. Thanks again!!!

If I set a user permission for a file, or a folder, does that permission REPLACE all existing permissions on that file/folder, or is that permission APPENDED to the existing permissions? If the permissions are REPLACED, how to I specify that I want the new permission APPENDED to the list of existing permissions? Cheers, Don

I created my own merge module of a collection of .dll and .ocx files. I would now like to add that merge module to my Basic MSI project. How do I do that? I have tried to add my merge module to the InstallShield list of redistributables, but it does not appear as a selectable item. I have added the .msm file from my merge module project as the only file in a component, but that does not seem to work. Any ideas? Cheers, Don

I want to specify that the DBQ property of an ODBC connection should be the equivalent of: [ROOTDRIVE]LuthLife\LLUser.mdb where ROOTDRIVE is the drive determined by InstallShield. Will this syntax work, or what is the correct syntax?

TsungH wrote: Not sure how you are setting your INSTALLDIR. It should be constructed such that it is under [ProgramFilesFolder] or that sort. You may want to look under Directory table. The program files are going into a subfolder under the [ProgramFilesFolder], but there are two separate folders which will not be going under the [ProgramFilesFolder]. These folders are for storing various databases. I want both of these database folders to go on the C: drive, even where there is a 😧 drive. Currently, the database folders are being created on the 😧 hard drive, if there is one. I have hard-coded the database folders in the path variables, but the folders are still created on 😧 I did check the help for information on the Directory Table, but there is no help on how to access the Directory Table, or change it. Do you have any suggestions?

On a target computer with only one hard drive (C:), my .MSI install works just fine. If I run the same install on a target computer with two hard drives (e.g. C: and D:), the files get installed on the second hard drive (D:). How do I specify that I only want the files installed on the C: hard drive regardless of the number of other hard drives present. Thanks in advance. Cheers, Don
