I'm currently using InstallShield Developer to create a setup for internal use and I'm looking to repack a few 3rd party installations and kick them off in my current setup.

Can AdminStudio capture services being created? One of the ones I'm trying to get is WinVNC.

I would also like to repack Oracle client and Terminal Services. Would there be any problems repacking these?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Jonathan,

Thank you for your question regarding Windows NT Services. Through the Component Wizard in Developer it is possible to package Windows NT Services. I'd start by taking a look at the online help for Developer and if you have any questions or run into any problems, please let us know.

Actually, we're looking to purchase AdminStudio to handle some repacking. I'm just wondering if there are any limitations to AdminStudio. Can I repack Oracle client, WinVNC, and Terminal Services into something than can be run silently, like a .msi file?

I don't think it would be a good idea just to copy files for WinVNC and set the service through Developer. I make sure I don't miss any registry entries or environment variables.
Jonathan,

Theoretically, if other applications can install it, AdminStudio can repackage it, there should be no problem in using AdminStudio to meet your needs.

I did a brief check in our knowledge base (support.installshield.com) and could not find any documented problems with Oracle client or WinVNC, so I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. But, I have a difficult time speaking about this in absolutes, as a tester, there's always room for doubt.

Hope this helps.

I understand. My manager was asking me if it could be done, but doesn't want me to spend the time trying out the demo to find out. I gave him the same answer you gave me .. theoretically, it should work. 🙂
