My naive opinion is for my software - having components marked as shared is only asking for trouble. But I have a feeling that if I don't have them as Shared, then nothing happens when you uninstall - no unregistering, no file removal. Then I'm stuck resorting to file removes and custom actions. Nothing in my software is shared by anything else on the machine. I purposefully make sure not to place assemblies in the GAC. I have COM dlls (mix of old ActiveX, and newer COMVisible assemblies) that do get registered but that's only so they can be used by my application, if I could avoid that I would. What I need to do is put files in directories and do some system stuff (dependency checking, environment variables, service, permissions, file associations, start menu items). And when I uninstall, get rid of all of that. Maybe there is a better way than using a .MSI project for my use case?

I need to change the install directory of a chained .MSI In a command prompt I can do this using
msiexec /i "Test1.msi" INSTALLDIR="C:\Program Files (x86)\NewInstallDir"
Is there a way to do this via Chained .msi packages settings?
If not any alternatives? I suppose I could use Custom Actions but if there is a way to modify my existing chained .msi configuration I'd rather go that way.
Thanks!

Also I've noticed that the uninstall itself isn't as clean as it used to be, its leaving behind Start menu items. Note that I am using a chained .msi and that .msi also recently changed so perhaps the issue is there?
Note I am not expecting you can "solve" this - what I'm hoping is you can provide information on what things can cause this behavior e.g. "If <this> errors out then you could see the above behavior" so I can troubleshoot this.

What are the possible configuration causes for extracted .msi files from a Setup.exe to remain on a pc after an uninstall?
Thanks in advance.

I have an installshield .ism basic msi project (I use the Visual Studio addin) that outputs a setup.exe. I call what this installs "the IDE" Note: the .ism project chains an .msi I want to also create a setup.exe that installs what I will call "the runtime". This is the exact same software, but I do not want this install to create shortcuts, and I need it on successful install to remove some files and remove the start menu's installed by the chained .msi Is this something I can do within the same .ism? Or do I need to copy the .ism and maintain two projects? Copying and pasting anything in a Visual Studio is never a simple task so if copy and paste is the way here - please let me know if there are any gotchas I have to worry about.

I've been trying to contact support to resolve a licensing issue via the North American numbers. After pressing 1, the music goes silent after about a minute. Is there an alternative contact number I can use?

Support helped me this morning. The does solve the problem. I had two mistakes. I did not refresh the redistributables grid, this is important to do; the 2010 icon had a ! even after reopening the project. I also had set Copy from Source Media , which was in conflict with what I wanted to do (create a single .exe

Sure wish you could edit these... 🙂 I replaced the .prq last week built a setup.exe - handled the C++ 2010 X86 runtime fine. Built a Setup.exe today, users report the problem described at the beginning of this thread. So the bad behavior reappeared.

Hi, Unfortunately, I replaced the .prq files as you described last week, and it seemed to work ( I reported that to Support). But today users reported the problem is still happening. Did something change again? Is there some way to force this to <work> no matter what? I don't care about the size of my Setup.exe etc. and I don't need to do worry about anything fancy other than - install it if its not there, do not install if it is. Thanks!

Ugh... well not sure what happened to the text of this post.. My installer redistributes C++ 2010 redistributable (x86). This has worked well for easily a month . Then all of the sudden I get these errors on install the redistributable is not on the machine. I tried removing it from my Redistributables and adding it back. Tried having it download from the web vs including it. I think the URL that InstallShield has has gone dead. Any ideas on how to fix this? Or am I on the wrong track?

This just recently starting happening. Attempting to install a C++ 2010 x86 fails with this error. I have tried unchecking and re-adding this, so I am just using the defaults. Any ideas?
