Hi Kelly, Thanks for your reply. I appreciate your help. I understand your concerns regarding the old agents etc. I'm not sure using client callout DLL's would help. If an update has already been installed (indicated by the existance of a certain registry key or local file), we don't want it to appear again in the list of updates to prevent it from being downloaded again. Regards, Marcel

I was purely trying to speed up the process of checking for updates since it takes a lot of time to execute. An asynchronous call would therefore not be interesting for me. As I understand, it's the VBscript that's taking so long to execute. I was wondering if grouping all VBscript actions for all updates would reduce the amount of time, since I've noticed that each update is processed one-by-one. In my humble opinion, it takes a lot of time (2.5 seconds) to do a simple check (for each update) for the existance of a registry key or file on a local computer. Aren't there any other possibilities to speed up the process? Best regards, Marcel

Hi Kelly, Do you know if this issue regarding the delays when checking for updates is resolved? I tested it with US agent 5.0.100.43906 but I'm still getting the long delays as mentioned in my previous postings. Regards, Marcel

Kelly, I just tested it again (5 times). Each test resulted in the same delay: 23 seconds. This if for a total of 9 updates (6 active updates and 3 test updates). I've never seen that the EnumUpdates() call only took about 3 seconds, it always takes much longer. I have tested it with a dial-up connection some time ago, and it then takes even longer I think. It seems to me that each update is processed separatedly. Some data is sent to the server and approx. 3 seconds later some data is received and the next update is processed and 3 seconds later some data is received and so on. I didn't use a packet sniffer or something, I looked at the data transfer LED's of the modem. I'll PM you the details about the specific product versions / updates. Marcel

vvikhnov, How can I modify the ISUS.msm merge module? I'm using DevStudio 9 and when I take a look at the InstallShield Update Service Object, I see a nice list of all the files contained within the object, but I can't delete ISUSPM.exe anywhere. Also, this won't uninstall the already installed Update Manager on our end-users computers, or am I wrong? Do you know how this can be done? And - to make it more complicated - is it possible to uninstall the Update Manager only when it was not present on the computer when our application was installed, but leave it intact when another program installed the Update Manager already? Thanks, Marcel

I just wanted you to know, that I'm always having this issue that my application is locked during the EnumUpdates() call. When there are more updates online, the time to finish the EnumUpdates() call takes longer. (I'm using the Update Service 4.6 Agent.) I wrote a separate executable that's being called from my main application, which does all the update checking and installation processing. At the moment, the time to finish the call is acceptable, but I expect some troubles when we publish more updates on the US Publisher Web Site. Regards, Marcel

Kelly, Thanks for your reply. I submitted this issue as a feature request like you proposed. If I understand you correctly, the US Web Site will perform the translation of the build numbers into the O.S. friendly names? And therefore all I have to do, is to modify my program to upload the O.S. version info (in "{%i.%i.%i}" format) using the API function CollectDefaultProfileData() ? Do you know when this feature will be implemented on the web site? Regards, Marcel

KellyF, thanks for your information. Maybe it's nice to have a gradation level for this. E.g. level 1 = O.S. name (only WinXP, Win98 etc.) level 2 = O.S. name plus applied service packs (Win98SE, W2K SP4 etc.). level 3 = pure build numbers (raw data). And in order to understand the level 3 (raw) data, one could lookup the translation table used for displaying the level 2 data ? (But) starting with just a choice between level 1 and 3 would be fine.... Regards, Marcel

I don't think that's a good approach for our situation, since it could be possible that our end users already have the Update Manager installed. I made a workaround that checks if the Update Manager startup key exists in the registry (HKLM\...\Run). If the key doesn't exist before the installation, the installer deletes it upon end of installation so that the Update Manager doesn't automatically start when the computer is rebooted. The Update Manager could be launched by the end-user from the control panel (no other shortcuts seem to be installed in our situation), but I already prevented our application to show up in the update list by invoking the "-hide" option during installation. Thanks for your input, Marcel

I tested it using the Uninstall Update Manager program from InstallShield. I did a double-check by searching for the file "isuspm.cpl". This is the file responsible for the Update Manager to appear in the control panel. The file "isuspm.cpl" is always installed, no matter what value I choose for the DWUSMANAGER entry. So the icon always appears in the control panel. Fortunately, I don't get an icon under the Start menu item.

Thanks for your reply. I tested my installation to find out if it installs the Update Manager or not. But unfortenutely, regardless of the value I use for the DWUSMANAGER entry, the Update Manager is always installed. I also tried to leave the value blank. I can't say that the Update Manager is launched when my program checks for updates. I only see a "Program Updates" icon in the Control Panel.

Is there going to be a simple tool on the website where we can choose between raw-data O.S. versions and user-friendly O.S. versions? Or do we have to do a manual translation of the build numbers into the user friendly numbers after the report has been created? Or perhaps translate the build numbers to user-friendly numbers ourselves before uploading them to the US database? (Which I don't prefer....)

I'm creating InstallScript projects using DevStudio 9. I tried setting the property to 0, but when I looked at the size of my installer, it remained the same size. So, the Update Manager is still included.

Our usage counter doesn't increment. Also when we create a report for the verbs of a particular update, we see all zero's for that update. It doesn't show how many times the update has been accepted, downloaded or installed. Are you sure this is fixed?
