Strangely enough, I've just been battling with this one. One thing I did that has made the problem go away (for now, anyway) is to change the ".net scan at build" settings to be "Properties Only". Previously, some of my components were set to "Properties & Dependencies" and some of the dependencies could not be found at build time. This was not so much of a problem to cause the project to error on building, but it did appear to give me that odd return value from IsCmdBld. HTH

The only way I've been able to deal with this in the past is to interrogate the XML files for the relevant info, overwrite the original xml files with the new ones from the upgrade, then modify the default values with the info previously obtained. During the original install you could save any relevant info to the registry, making obtaining it a tad easier. HTH

Here's a quick one for you - I've been asked to investigate if it's possible to launch our BasicMSI application into "new instance install" mode without using the command line, by simply double-clicking on the .msi file. This must also allow the application to be able to run in normal maintenance mode as well. Our previous Installscript install allowed this, and they're after similar functionality. I'm pretty sure it's not possible, but if it is some pointers on where to look would be appreciated.

This has been bugging me for many days now, and I'm at the hair pulling out stage. Can anyone help? I have a BasicMSI install, that has a type 3078 CA (vbscript stored in binary table set for deferred action in system context), which means - as I understand - that the CA will run with elevated privileges. The properties it requires are fed in via a type 51 CA ("set property" action set to run with immediate action). Here's the function I'm calling:
function ModifyRequestFiltering const IDOK=1 const IDABORT=3 Err.Clear szCustomActionData=Session.Property("CustomActionData") MyArray=Split(szCustomActionData, ";") szWebsite=MyArray(0) szSystemName=MyArray(1) szApplicationName=MyArray(2) 'Create Shell object Set Shell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell") if Err.Number <> 0 then 'Return FAIL ModifyRequestFiltering=IDABORT Exit Function End if 'Obtain System dir WinDir = shell.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%WINDIR%") if Session.Property("VersionNT") <> "" then '32bit OS detected szSystemDir = "\system32" else 'Not 32bit OS, therefore 64bit szSystemDir = "\SysWOW64" end if WinSysDir = WinDir & szSystemDir szApp=WinSysDir & "\inetsrv\appcmd.exe" szCmdLine="set config """ & szWebsite & "/xxx_" & szSystemName & "_" & szApplicationName & """ -section:system.webServer/security/requestFiltering /-fileExtensions.[\[]fileExtension='.config'[\]] -commitpath:apphost" 'Create Shell.Application object set objShell=CreateObject("Shell.Application") ReturnCode=objShell.ShellExecute(szApp, szCmdLine, "", "runas", 1) set objShell=nothing if ReturnCode <> 0 then 'Return FAIL ModifyRequestFiltering=IDABORT Exit Function end if ' Release Shell object Set Shell = nothing 'Return SUCCESS ModifyRequestFiltering=IDOK end function
This should end up with the ".config" entry being removed from the file name extensions in the "Request Filtering" feature of the virtual application within IIS. My problem is that the execution of appcmd appears to function with no reported error, but the target system is not modified. I'm logging the output of this, and if I then re-run the exact same command line the just failed via a "Run As Administrator" command prompt then it works. What's the difference between running with "elevated privileges" and "Run As Administrator" ? Am I missing something?

This is an odd one... I have an MSI that contains a VBscript custom action stored in the binary table, and not scheduled to be executed at all. I use this compiled MSI as a base for my transform, where I modify the properties of the CA to be executed deferred in system context (I also have a modify property CA that passes in all the required values via CustomActionData). Now comes the tricky part: The CA itself executes "appcmd.exe" and uses the following command line
"szCmdLine=WinSysDir & "\inetsrv\appcmd.exe set config """ & szWebsite & """/xxx_" & szSystemName & "_" & szApplicationName & " -section:system.webServer/security/requestFiltering /-fileExtensions.[fileExtension='.config'] -commitpath:apphost""
If I modify the MSI so that the CA is triggered during execution of the base MSI the code is executed normally and all is well. However, if I trigger the CA via the transform the command line becomes: "szCmdLine=WinSysDir & "\inetsrv\appcmd.exe set config """ & szWebsite & """/xxx_" & szSystemName & "_" & szApplicationName & " -section:system.webServer/security/requestFiltering /-fileExtensions. -commitpath:apphost"" In other words, the text "[fileExtension='.config']" appears to be evaluated as a property and replaced by null. Any ideas why this is happening ? Or what I can do to prevent my command line being mangled ?:confused:

BTW - am I missing the link to the SAB somewhere or has it not been released yet? I can browse to the Product & Licence centre, but the only version of the SAB is see is 2012 (version 18.00.0000, which installs IsCmdBld.exe version 18.0.0.329, which is the same version as vanilla 2012)

Does anyone know why this happens? I have an MSI based install called "TestProject" with two release types, called "WITH" and "WITHOUT". I have named the product configuration "Default Configuration". The release type called "WITH" has "Use Path Variable Test Values" turned on, but "WITHOUT" does not. "WITHOUT" builds to " \Default Configuration\WITHOUT". "WITH" builds to " \TestProject\Default Configuration\WITH". If have built this many times, and confirmed that if I turn off "Use Path Variable Test Values" then the WITH build no longer has "TestProject" in the build path. This is quite annoying - how can I prevent the name of the project being included in the build output path while still having "Use Path Variable Test Values" turned on?
