Hi all, I need to detect if UAC is on during installation in order to prompt a message (if msi is being run). So far, I had done this successfully using the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\EnableLUA key. On WIN8, this key is no longer initialized when setting UAC on/off, therefore no longer usable for UAC detection. I would appreciate your help with this, Thanks, Sharon.

Hi, If a .net dll is compiled as MSIL or 64 bit - and component is marked as 64 bit, the registration should be done to the 64 bit part of the registry. If a .net dll is compiled as 32 bit - even if the component is marked as 64 bit, the registration should be done to the 32 bit part of the registry. Good Luck, Sharon.

Hi, I would check if UAC is ON. In that case, if the user running the installation does not have permissions to the location where the shortcut is to be created --> it will fail. it should succeed if you run the installation "as adminitrator" (right click the exe and choose "run as administrator"). Good Luck, Sharon.

Hi, did you put the common dlls inside components? each dll in a separate component? if true - are they marked a s shared components? Or - are you using a merge module in order to install these common dlls? Sharon.

Hi, I would like to verify this behavior for WI patches (minor update): This part is well documented: When a patch is installed using reinstall=all, only feature that were selected for installation will be updated But for this part I could not find any documentation: If a patch includes an update to feature A, But feature A was not selceted at the time the patch was installed, in order to update A we need to: 1. run MODIFY to add feature A. 2. Run the patch installation AGAIN in order to apply the patch update for A. This is something I had always "known" - but would really appreciate some reference that proves it - or proves the opposite. Thanks a lot, Sharon.

Hi all, Using basic MSI, I need to enable installation only if the OS is 64 bit, WIN SERVER 2008 R2 SP1. I successfully use this code to detect WIN SERVER 2008 R2 on 64 bit: if (svVersionNT64 =="601") then// 64 BIT, win server 2008 R2 or WIN7 if (!(SYSINFO.nOSProductType == VER_NT_WORKSTATION)) then //server but when I debug this: if (SYSINFO.WINNT.nServicePack >= 1) I get false value, although the target machine has SP1 installed. Any suggestions for checking the SP value correctly on WIN SERVER 2008 R2? Thanks! Sharon.

Hi all, I have multuple features in a basic msi project. one of them needs to be disabled on full UI and enabled only on SILENT mode using a "secret" property. meaning, that even if the user passes the feature in ADDLOCAL list, it should not be installed unless the property was set as well in command line. I tried adding a feature condition using a new property, and passing the property before ADDLOCAL on cmd. Unfortunately, as far as I can see, Feature conditions are evaluated only if ADDLOCAL is not set. Therefore, when not including the feature on ADDLOCAL with the rest of the required features, the feature condition does not get evaluated and the feature does not get installed. when including it on ADDLOCAL - it gets installed without checking the condition. I have been struggling with this a lot, would appreciate your help. Thanks, Sharon.

Hi all, As described above, I have an installation which includes one .net component that is installed to the GAC and set as "scan dependencies and properties" in feature A. In case I install the Release version with feature A not selected (this feature includes this problematic component), And then install a service pack for this product, Trying to modify the product and add feature A after SP installed causes this error: Note: 1: 2262 2: Binary 3: -2147287038 Error 1310.Error writing to file I would appreciate if anyone can share suggestions for resolution of this issue. Thanks,

Hi, When selecting the merge module for installation, You need to verify that it is marked to be installed with the correct features in the feature tree. The tree appears in the bottom part of the IDE when you stand with your mouse on the merge module in the view of the merge modules list. In addition - You could set the destination where this merge module is installed on the target machine. Standing on the merge moduel in the list, right clicking-> properties. As far as I know, These c++ redist' are supposed to have the defaut path. Is it possible that you manually changed it? Good Luck,

Hi, I tried adding the component to the main installation as scan properties only in addition to the component at the merge module and got error 1310 during installtion (failing to write into file), Tried making both components - at merge module and main project - scan prop' only, but got error 5108 during build. The temporary solution was to remove the previous package value, but this is no valid solution as I need to make sure the new patch can be installed correctly on the top of the previous patch. I need a valid solution that will enable continue using the previous package field, Would appreciate your help, Thanks,

Hi, I am assuming you are using basic msi project. If so - are you creating a log file? did you check that the CA really did not fire? In case the CA is being run, It might be that the registry entry is being created in the 64 bit portion of the registry instead at the 32 bit portion. I suggest you read about REGDB_OPTION_WOW64_64KEY "Specifies that all future general registry operations affect the 64-bit parts of the registry instead of the 32-bit parts of the registry (on a 64-bit system). Setting this option on a 32-bit system has no effect." In case you expect the key to always be created at the 32 bit portion, I suggest you add this to your Installscript code: if(SYSINFO.bIsWow64) then REGDB_OPTIONS = REGDB_OPTIONS & ~REGDB_OPTION_WOW64_64KEY; endif; in case you want to create the key at 64 bit portion, you can use: REGDB_OPTIONS = REGDB_OPTIONS | REGDB_OPTION_WOW64_64KEY; Hope this helps.. Sharon.

Hi All, I am using minor updates (PATCHES) for my product. On the last update (Service pack), I added a merge module to one of the products. This merge module includes one .net dll, that by mistake was set to: Scan dependencies and properties, instead of scan properties only. Now, when building the next SP, Using the msi built for the previous SP as previous package, The patch of the product fails to install with error 1935 and HRESULT 0x80131532. The component that fails to be installed to the GAC is not included in the product or the merge module, but I can see in Orca it is part of the msm - probably because it's a depnendency of the dll I talked about. I know A.stebner's publishment at https://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/default.aspx?p=65. My msiassembly table includes entries in File_Manifest column which do not exist in the file table. But I would like to know what should be the SOLUTION to this issue using WI and installshield best practices. Thanks a lot in advance for any advice you may give, Sharon.
