Checking for prerequisite programs
I have a relatively simple installation for an Access application, but I need to check the client computer for the existence of the Access 2003 Runtime (or a full Access version) or higher. If the runtime is not found I need to have a custom error message with details for downloading the runtime. Does this require a Custom Action or is there an easier way? If a Custom Action is required is there any sample code for how to check for the existence of a particular application on a client computer?

did you find your answer? I am trying to check whether an application already exists also and throw a simple message to the user that it needs to be installed.

You might see if using the System Search Wizard to do the detection, and then creating an install condition to display the message and exit (if appropriate) will help.
