Has anyone deployed agents to compute resources in GCP? If so, do your agents report back to an on prem beacon or internet facing or x?

No, no agents installed on GCP yet.
But what exactly went wrong during the inventory ?
Does the agent perform a policy download?
How does the agent setup looks like, or should look like?
