Currently our product works on both 32 and 64 bit OS. We are wanting to phase out 32 bit so I am trying to get the install to throw up a popup message if we detect a 32 bit and let them know we recommend they upgrade their machine to 64 bit. Is there another way to detect if we are on a 32 bit OS?

Hello everyone I have a problem with a custom action not running a BAT file as administrator. Here is some background. Our product installs a Windows Service that runs as Local System Account (NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM) . The service connects to SQL Express 2019. In order for the service to have permission to create the database and run we have to run sql to set NT Authority\System user as sql sysadmin account. USE Master; Go EXEC master..sp_addsrvrolemember @loginame = N'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM', @rolename = N'sysadmin' Go here is the error I get Changed database context to 'master'. Msg 15151, Level 16, State 1, Server DESKTOP-MEEAI4V\TRACSSE, Line 1 Cannot alter the server role 'sysadmin', because it does not exist or you do not have permission. I have the bat file below setup as a customer action. The problem is when the bat file runs I get an error that it doesn't have permission. If I leave the install running and go find the file and right click and choose run as admin it works. I have tried about every option possible for the custom action and it still doesn't work. Any help or another was to setup these permission would be greatly appreciated.

I have a product that is currently running SQL Express 2012 with approx. 2500 users. I am in the process of upgrading sqlexpress 2012 to 2019 and looking for help/suggestions on how to make it work. Here are the 2 different scenarios. 1. Product is currently installed and my 2012 instance exists. I then need to pass the upgrade parameter to the sqlexpress install and upgrade to 2019. I hope to do this with a prerequisite. 2. Product not installed and need to load sqlexpress 2019 fresh with my instance name. I guess what I am asking is there a 2019 SQL Express Prerequisite available anywhere? If so can I use the same Prerequisite for both scenarios or do I need to create 2 different one. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I am populating my config file with values I get from a system search and the problem I am having is that the string that gets put in the config file is XML encoded and the client app blows up when it tries to read the string. Here is what it should be Here is How Installshield is writing it How can I force installshield to write the " instead of ": Also is there a way to put conditions on XML file changes. Thanks in advance for you help.

How would I go about doing this? Are the login and password stored in the registry? Is this even possible? The Orginal install is not asking the user for the user and password. This is something that gets done after the product gets installed and the users configures the service.

I have tried the -r command line and the iss file never gerts created anywhere on the system. What am I missing or doing wrong. skolte wrote: Please refer to this article. You can use setup.log (ResponseResult section at the end of the article) or the result of SdFinish dialog to detect whether installation was successful. You can use event such as OnFirstUIAfter(), OnEnd() to detect the result of installation and proceed with further steps accordingly. In a service that I wrote a few years ago, I simply use OnEnd() event to update config files before restarting the service.

I am working on an installs/updates that updates a Windows Service. The install stops the service if it is running and then lays down the new files then starts the service back up. After the install is complete I call a installscript custom actions that calls a C#.NET exe that send send a message to another computer letting them know the installation is complete. All that works fine but here is where the fun comes in. I need to run this installation in silent mode which I can do with command line params but Is thers a install properties that I can use to determine if the install had success or failure. I need to run my .NET exe send a status back of success or failre. So how should I approach this? Is there a property I can check like ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE or INSTALL_SUCCESS? Or is there an easier way?
