Hi Pradsads, You would only enter info into the Update Service (now called FLEXnet Connect) server field if you were hosting your own server... For information specific to adding your product & updates so that they're seen by the update service, check out: Products and Updates I do strongly recommend that you check out the brief tutorial, though, at: http://helpnet.macrovision.com (click through the FLEXnet Connect 6.1 link to find the getting started and information that'll help you use the tool effectively). Regards, Kelly prasads wrote: Hello, I am trying to develop Update Services for Windows Applcation using InstallShield 10.5. When I install application and check for its updates I got error message saying "Either you are not connected to Internet or Update Services Server is currently unavailable." I tried this by entering path to server in Host field of Update Service settings. When I kept this blank and tries for update check i got message updates are not available. Since i dont know how to put the updated files on Host I tried to give path to server location but i m not successful in it... can anyone help me to get through this problem? Also suggest me how to upload the new Installer files to Update Service server:confused:

Hi Thorsten, Bad assumption on my part. No edits were made to your update/message, so most of the notification servers still had the old URL cached. I just manually purged the cache for you, so you should now see it on the other servers. If you don't, please PM me your product code and version you're checking for so I can look at things further. Regards, Kelly Thorsten Kaiser wrote: Hi again, my java application has still the same problem. the methodcall not.getProperty(NotificationProperty.NP_LOCAL_FILENAME); (not is a INotification) gets still the wrong address. Hi Scheng, I guess that means that nobody here has tried what you had described. If you are looking for an answer from the MVSN support folks, you'll want to post your query to: http://support.macrovision.com. They'll be able to give you a much better idea of how to make it work or if it's even possible. Regards, Kelly scheng wrote: The silence is deafening. Did I miss something?

Hello dkaatz, It looks like we have an opportunity to refine our communications. I haven't seen the email you mention, but I'll try to get my hands on it. Regarding your desire for more information, new releases typically point to http://www.globes.com/pages/flexnetconnect/current/fncdown.htm. That's where you'll find the release notes, details of what was fixed and changed, etc. The SDK is recommended due to the changes made which allow a separate agent for a given product rather than an agent as a shared resource. That also happens to be the reason we do not publisher updates to the agent. It would be perhaps a bit rude of us to change the bits that a different software vendor had set onto the machine. There's so much more than that, though. As always, I encourage you to submit your feedback on what we can improve via the corporate website: http://www.macrovision.com/feedback/web_feedback.shtml. In particular, it sounds as though we didn't meet your expectations with the email announcement, so please let us know how we can improve. Regards, Kelly

Hello nikhilgupta, There are two flavors of FLEXnet Connect. The first is the Macrovision-hosted edition, where you tag onto our application server farm to host the metadata. That environment is already set up and always the latest edition. The second is the one I believe you're asking about: on-site (aka self-hosted). That is the version in which you install the application server and host your own metadata. You can read up a bit more under the on-site section at the URL below. http://www.macrovision.com/products/flexnet_publisher/flexnet_connect/resources/index.shtml Finally, you can also contact the sales folks directly and they'll be happy to discuss your needs to ensure that they're met in full. Regards, Kelly

Hi AAcesUp, Regarding your issue with Product not recognized... I'm assuming you're a hosted-service customer. If so, you can call the Macrovision support folks who will be able to have a look at your product & info on the publisher site to see if it's all correct. They'll be your fastest resource to checking out settings related to your product and visibility. Regards, Kelly

Hi Brian, The physical placement of the files you're distributing are actually more of a factor of your installation routine for your update, not FLEXnet Connect. FNC will see your update, check conditions that you've placed upon the update and determine whether the user should get the update. It then downloads and executes your update. (except if you're using the "file sync update" type which is described at http://helpnet.macrovision.com/robo/projects/updateservice60/HelpLib-06-09.htm Regards, Kelly

You're somewhat right in terms of updates... you could either A) Make sure that your update increments the version number within the FNC client so that the updates tied to version X will not be seen by version X+1. This will allow you to more easily manage your updates and is by far the fastest way to accomplish what you're looking to do. B) Have a condition set on the update to look at the value of a registry key, the date/version of a file (say a DLL that was updated). If you would like to set a registry condition, you can find the steps here (http://helpnet.macrovision.com, click on "FLEXnet Connect 6.0", "Using Conditions to Target Specific Customers and End Users") Conditions were created as a way for you to target specific specific clients that had met a criteria, not necessarily as the way for showing/hiding updates for all. That said, I'd strongly recommend incrementing the version number once you've applied your update. Regards, Kelly BCarpenter wrote: Does the Update Service client provide the capability (built-in) to hide/not show an update that has already been installed by an end-user? It seems like the installed updates continue to show on the end-user's software manager even after they have been installed. The only option I could see to accomplish this is to set conditions on the update (via the FLEXNet Connect web site) to check either for a file/registry setting/other setting to not show the update. Any information on how others accomplished this would be appreciated. Thanks Brian

Hello Bryantlk, Have you submitted this either via the website or through support as a bug? Regards, Kelly bryantlk wrote: I attempted to not include the Macrovision merge module (components) Manager in my basic msi builds. It would not go away. In 'Direct Editor' I located the Table 'IsMergeModule', and deleted the related Row. Builds then occurred without a problem. This is no doubt a bug. I had turned of the update service altogether 'No', and also 'No' for the 'Manager' and the components kept being part of all project builds.

Robert, Good luck on the instantiation, I can't say I've used srvany since it was part of the Win2k ResKit, and even then I think I always ran it as a privileged user (administrator). Guess I had momentarily forgotten about Vista's UAC (though it's in my face daily 😕 ). I won't deny that running under a service isn't something necessarily supported by Macrovision, though I wonder if you asked the support folks whether they have any experience with it. Regards, Kelly P.S. I've been mostly sticking with installing Java classes as services, though I an say that I just installed my service under it seemingly without issue.

Hi Julien, robysk8 wrote: We make softwares for hospitals and we would like the Update Agent to be ONLY deployed on our client's server, then their IT administrator will take care of the updates' distribution. We don't want our end-users (doctors) to be involved in the update process. Is it possible to do that with the Macrovision-Hosted Solution ? I'm not 100% clear on what you're looking for, but it sounds like you want files to be transferred to the hospital's server and await deployment / installation by an administrator. If that is the case, I would recommend you have a look at the "file sync" feature to push down your product installer via zip that can then be used by the admin. For more specific discussion about it, I'd recommend you speak with one of the product reps so they can give you exactly what you need to know to make it happen. Finally, How do I migrate all my products already on sites to the FLEXnet solution? Do I need to re-send installs for each product in order to add the Update Service Merge Module and register the product\version ? Some mechanism would be necessary to get the agent onto the server in the first place, but once in place, it would be possible to have the agent then pull down your installers for the admin. Again, for the nitty-gritty details, it'll be best to speak with one of the sales technical staff because they've most likely seen it done before and can discuss with you. Regards, Kelly
