Spider 6.4.8 update is available
Release Date: 2022-12-15
A new update has been released for Spider. Please see the included changes below. To be notified of these kinds of product updates, please ensure that you have subscribed to the Spider Release blog.
New Features and Improvements to Spider in Dec 2022
Spider 6.4.8 includes the following product features and improvements.
Feature
Description
Index-based search
The new index-based search in Spider enables users to find objects across the entire application suite. The search is integrated on almost all pages on the top right of the navigation bar.
Permissions of legal entities are fully respected in the index-based search. Various ways of filtering the search result are supported.
To protect disk space, the feature is delivered disabled. For more information around the index-based search, visit the Flexera Community at: https://community.flexera.com/t5/Spider-Knowledge-Base/Index-based-search/ta-p/257931
Usability for selecting defaults
The page for selecting software products (select standard) has been revised for improved usability. Now the page accepts multiple search filters and grouping of the search result has been enabled.
Employee
The employee search in the master data now also resolves connected users. If an employee is stored for several users, the employee will be displayed several times. The User Mapped field supports filtering.
License allocations
Previously it was possible to maintain multiple license allocations for a single legal entity under one license. This is now prevented. Existing allocations will be migrated to the latest license allocation. Furthermore, the bulk import for license allocations has been integrated.
Accessibility
Keyboard navigations in table views has been revised. Paging and sorting using the keyboard have been improved.
Corrections in Spider 6.4.8
The December 2022 update of Spider contains the following corrections.
Feature
Description
User interface
If a specially filtered and grouped search result was opened and the search page was immediately reloaded, an error could occur.
Under certain circumstances, no entries were displayed on the service task overview page.
The pager was not displayed for exactly 21 hits in the member list of an Active Directory group. As a result, navigation to the 21st hit was not possible in this case.
On the work list for the License Maintenance Assistant, inactive licenses are hidden, and the "Upgradeable" box can no longer be clicked.
Business logic
The maximum length of product names has been increased to 256 characters so that even very long names from the product catalog are no longer truncated.
Under certain circumstances, downloading a document version via the Spider API interface could fail.
Under certain circumstances, recurring reminders (resubmissions) were only sent on the second shipping date.
If an employee initially supplied by Active Directory is no longer delivered to Spider, it was not marked correctly.
In the very long synchronization processes between Software Services and Spider Asset, changes made to the asset in the meantime could be overwritten.
Under certain circumstances, tasks for resubmissions could not be created automatically (function not available in all editions).
Configuration
For newer search pages, the MaxRows setting in the configuration is no longer supported. Obsolete configuration keys have been removed.
The active control of tiles in the task dashboard has meanwhile been omitted and has been added again.
The "AvailableFrom" and "AvailableTo" fields have been removed from Volume Licensing agreements.
Spider application database names can now have a length of up to 128 characters.

With Spider 6.4.8, a new quick search functionality in Spider is introduced. The feature is a fully integrated search engine based on the Microsoft SQL Server Fulltext feature. It enables the fast finding of objects (in several types) in the Spider application suite.
The following object types are indexed and can therefore be found with the feature: Article, Asset, Catalog article, Contract, Contractor, Employee, Function unit, License, and Manufacturer.
👆 The former index-based search (OneSearch) is replaced by the new functionality and will be removed with the update to Spider 6.4.8.
Reachability
The index-based search is reachable in most of the Spider application forms on the top right of each page. Please see the magnifier icon and click on it to open the search box.
Search Result
The search results are displayed grouped by type. The hits within their groups are displayed as hyperlinks that lead to the detail page of the indexed object.
For performance reasons, the display of results per object group is limited to 150,000 hits. If this limit is exceeded, a message is issued (in this example for catalog articles). To get more specific results, the query has to be qualified by additional search terms.
Search Logic
The index-based search allows to show results by using single words as well as with the combination of multiple search terms. Therefore, the feature follows these rules:
Operators
By default, given search terms will be combined following the logic of AND. The index-based search also supports the operators OR and NOT.
👆 Operators must not appear at the beginning of a search query, as they must combine two search terms. Otherwise, an internal error occurs.
Operator
Description
AND
All given search terms have to be matched in the indexed object to be displayed as search result.
OR
At least one of the given search terms has to be matched in the indexed object to be displayed as result.
AND NOT
If the given search term matches, the indexed object will be excluded from the result.
Word breaking
By default, Microsoft SQL Server using characters like dots and hyphens as word breakers. For example, "company-device-333" would be found by searching for "device" as well as "device" and/or "333". Specific fields like hostnames contain those characters in their actual names. To be able to search for specific names, the index functionality replaces those characters internally. Therefore, hostnames can be found by their specific names.
Type filters
By using type filters, the search result can be limited to a specific type. This is done by typing the object type followed by a colon, a space character, and the search term, e.g.:
manufacturer: microsoft
Supported type filters

Requirements & Configuration
To get the new feature up and running, following steps should be considered:
The SQL Server Fulltext feature is installed and enabled
There is sufficient disk space available on the system (10 Gigabyte recommended)
Feature is activated in the Spider configuration (disabled by default)
Feature is activated in mandator details (enabled by default)
The index has been created and is up to date
To support the configuration of the index-based search, an administrative page has been added to the Spider user interface. It is available through the Spider main menu via System > Information about index.
Furthermore, the feature will be enabled in the details page of the mandator. Here, the tab page "Index-based search" has been added.

Spider enables the user to handle documents, including document versions in Spider. In some scenarios, the migration of documents to another apllication might be useful, for example if a document management system should be connected.
To export all documents out of Spider, a Linq script has been developed. This will be connected to a Spider application database and will store all available documents to a local (Windows) folder.
The created structure will follow this schema
DatabaseName > Mandator > ObjectType > ObjectIdentifier > DocumentFolder > FileName
Warning: Use at your own risk. The script is free of use as is, but no warranty is given. No liability is assumed. To execute the script, the tool LinqPad can be used.
LINQPad is not just for LINQ queries, but any C#/F#/VB expression, statement block or program. Put an end to those hundreds of Visual Studio Console projects cluttering your source folder and join the revolution of LINQPad scripters and incremental developers. - https://www.linqpad.net/
Consideration
Please consider and execute the following steps to export the documents:
Make sure you have enough local disk space. Depending on the number and the size of documents stored in the Spider database, the exported documents might need plenty of space.
Download and install LinqPad. In our test, we've used LinqPad 5, which is free. https://www.linqpad.net/Download.aspx
Open the script in LinqPad
Configure the connection and the script
Execute the script and monitor the progress. After hitting the green Play button, the progress will be shown in the results window (at the bottom of the application)
Configuration
After installing LinqPad and opening the script, please configure to application as follows:
Create a connection to the SQL server on which the Spider databases are located. The user should have read permission to the database, updates will not be performed.
Set the Language to "C# program".
Select the database you'd like to export documents from. All Spider 6.4 application databases are supported. If you'd like to download documents from multiple databases, you have to execute the script for each database.
Type in the local root folder for the exported documents.
The Script
Download the script here: https://community.flexera.com/xtqzp85664/attachments/xtqzp85664/Spider-Knowledge/181.7/2/Export Spider documents.zip
Or copy the source code to LinqPad from here:
