Just to close the loop on this. I was able to get on the beacon with the customer and find the discovery/inventory rule logs that showed that an inventory rule ran and captured beacon inventory. So, as per this thread discussion, the customer inadvertently ran a inventory rule which captured inventory from the Beacon.

I knew that parts of the agent was installed with the Beacon. From your response, I can conclude that it is not possible to see Beacon inventory within FNMS unless someone manually runs the agent on the beacon or sets up the policy for the beacon. Therefore, I can only conclude that the customer has mistakenly run the agent on the beacon.

Does an inventory beacon automatically report inventory for itself or does the user/customer have to manually invoke the ndtrack for the beacon server? My understanding is the beacon does not ever report inventory and manual intervention is required to take inventory for the beacon. In the customer FNMS tenant in question, 1 of the 3 beacons has reported inventory but the other 2 have not. But the customer claims they have not invoked ndtrack on any of the beacons so the question is why is one of the beacons reporting inventory ?

Actually, your post has reminded me there is already an AWS connector. Perhaps it is able to gather the RDS inventory (core) information as well. Can someone in the community comment?

Thanks for the reply. However, I'm looking for more concrete information regarding handling a AWS Oracle RDS BYOL license management scenario using FNMS. Typically you would either deploy the FNMS agent into the target Oracle DB server and gather software/hardware/oracle inventory. For VMs, you'd also have to get the physical hardware inventory typically through the hypervisor. In the case of Oracle RDS in AWS, you cannot deploy an FNMS inventory agent because the oracle database is provided as a service. I am assuming that you could do a remote Oracle inventory from the beacon via the RDS listener (this is an unconfirmed assumption). But this would still leave the problem of determining the vCores used for the Oracle RDS services in question. In other words, FNMS needs the number of vCores to calculate an Oracle DB license position for Oracle Databases running in the cloud. How would this be accomplished? One idea might be to ask the customer to tell us the AWS EC2 instance type (e.g. t1.micro, t2.small), using this information from amazon, https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/physicalcores/, we could then create a inventory spreadsheet and upload it into FNMS as hardware evidence. However, this is quite tedious and we're looking for a more elegant, automated solution.

We also have a customer that wants to manage AWS RDS for Oracle using the BYOL option. Were there any capabilities towards this end in the recent 2019R2 release? If not, are there any recommendations on how to manage the inventory gathering for AWS RDS for Oracle given that you cannot deploy an FNMS inventory agent?

If an adopted FNMS Inventory agent is unable to gather Oracle database inventory on Windows because OS authentication is disabled, it is my understanding that remote oracle database inventory via the beacon is the only viable option for Oracle inventory. Is this correct? If my assumption is correct, my question is, if the FNMS discovery/inventory rule is setup to gather inventory from a logical Oracle service that has RAC behind the curtain, is the inventory process able to get ALL of the discrete instances that make up the logical database service? For example, let's say a logical database service called "ORCL" is made up of 3 physical instances called "ORCL1", "ORCL2", "ORCL3", will the discovery and inventory rule that gathers oracle database inventory from the "ORCL" service be able to detect and gather database inventory for all 3 instances? If not, how does one get all of the instances - assume there is no listener available for the individual RAC services, ORCL1, ORCL2, and ORCL3.

@BradAkers , Thanks for the feedback. I was not aware of the business adapters practice guide. As you mention, the business adapter practice guide does say, "It is not possible to move license data around because of the database model.". Can you please elaborate and provide some additional details? Is it that the cloud database model for licenses do not match the onpremise model and therefore can not properly map the onpremise object properties to the cloud properites? or is it something else? THanks

Our customer is interested in migrating from FNMS OnPremise to FNMS Cloud. The main objective is to avoid having to upgrade every X number of months/years. Does anyone have any experience with this? The customer is using FNMS2017R3 and the cloud as of this writing is 2019R1. We are considering using Business Adapters to extract all of the FNMS objects directly from the OnPremise database into the FNMS cloud via a newly deployed Cloud beacon. The downside is that historical change records for objects in the onpremise system would be lost once it was migrated to the cloud. Also it is not clear whether this would cover all data in the customers OnPremise solution. In other words, is there data that the business adapters would not be able to migrate? Also, is there a better way other than using Business Adapters?

Chris, thanks for the confirmation. However, the original post was to confirm that the logged in user functionality is not currently deprecated but expected to function as we all understand it should. In other words, the problem seen with 12.4 on windows 10 is just an anomaly. That is what I would like to ultimately confirm.

Don't take my word for it. Let the agent convince you. The Agent version is 12.4 (not 12.4.1) on Windows 10. I too thought had my doubts and spent many hours setting up environments trying to understand the problem. I can only share my evidence and conclusions based on evidence. Oh by the way, the agent has to be running as SYSTEM to reproduce this problem. If you just run ndtrack as a user, the problem will not appear. So the two ways to reproduce it is to let it run as scheduled or to run it from the scheduler window by right clicking on the gathering inventory -> run

How does one download the FNMS Agent for Ubuntu? I noticed in the GatheringFlexNetInventory document, the documented install command is: dpkg --install managesoft_[VERSION]_i386.deb But a debian package is not downloadable as an agent installer package from FNMS. Am I missing something ?
