chained .msi fails in virtual machine

I read the white paper on chained .msi installs and noticed they don't work with remote desktop connections. Could it also be that they don't work inside virtual machines? I have a chained .msi installation that runs fine on my machine but fails consistently inside a VMWare virtual machine. If it helps, a blank warning message appears.

Sike, user error. Chained .msi does work in VMWare.
