Uninstall application installed for single user as someone else.

I have an application that was deployed, erroneously, as a per-user install (I forgot to set the ALLUSERS property to "1"). I am now at the point where I need to ship out a new major upgrade, and am trying to use a deployment tool that is running as Local System to perform the update, but am receiving the 1605 error "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed." I am trying to find an elegant way to remove this installation but would be open to any non-elegant ways as well (hacks) as I could easily have a custom action on the next version wipe away my previous data if it exists.

We had a similar problem and I couldn't find an "elegant" way to resolve it. I resorted to creating a custom action that ran MsiZap.exe to remove the Windows Installer registry keys for the old version. My install then installed new versions of the file in the same location as the old install, per-machine.
