Suite install - Access environment variables

Is it possible to access environment vaiables when building text strings in the suite installer ?

In particular I want to get the setting of 'SystemDrive'. I've tried various combinations of %SystemDrive% or [SystemDrive] with no success.

Not directly, but you can write C++ code to get this sort of thing. See some of the blog posts, particularly Extension Conditions and later, for some ideas.
