Using Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6 and Earlier Runtime

Summary

This article explains how to use the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6 and earlier runtime on a target machine, rather than the IIS 7 or later runtime used by operating systems starting with Windows Vista and later.

Synopsis

This article explains how to use the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6 and earlier runtime on a target machine, rather than the IIS 7 or later runtime used by operating systems starting with Windows Vista and later.

Discussion

It may be desirable to use the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6 and earlier runtime on a target Windows Vista machine if they were already using the legacy runtime. To use this legacy runtime rather than the IIS 7 and later runtime, follow the steps below:

  1. Create the following property in the Property Manager and set it's value to "1": IISPREFERLEGACYOBJECTS = 1
  2. Ensure IIS 6 metabase compatibility is turned on on the target machine.

Note: This property only impacts Windows Vista and later operating systems, on earlier operating systems the Legacy objects are always used.
