Installshield iKernel.exe Could Not Be Installed (0x20)

Summary

The error usually occurs if there is already an instance of iKernel.exe running in memory.

Symptoms

The InstallShield engine (iKernel.exe) could not be installed. iKernel.exe could not be copied to C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Engine\6\Intel 32. Make sure that you have the appropriate privileges to copy files to this folder. (0x20)

Cause

The error usually occurs if there is already an instance of iKernel.exe running in memory.

Resolution

1. Detect if a copy of iKernel.exe is running, if so end the task.
  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete.
  2. Select Task Manager.
  3. Select the Processes tab.
  4. Look for IKernel.exe. If it is running, select it and click End Process.
  5. Select Yes to the Task Manager Warning dialog.

2. Delete the existing iKernel engine.
  1. Using Windows Explorer browse to C: \Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\engine.

b. Right-click the highlighted engine directory and select Delete.

3. Install the latest version of the iKernel engine.

a. Download iKernel engine update and save it to your Desktop.
b. Double-click ikernelupdate.exe to install it.
