uninstall software before minor install??

hey guys how can i accomplish the above i.e. uninstall the old software when doing the minor install

If you are using Basic MSI and minor upgrade to uninstall the old product, it is not possible. Even if you try to uninstall using custom action to launch msiexec /x [ProductCode] the custom action will simply hang.
If you want to uninstall old product completely, go for major upgrade.

ok then... next question is how to make my installer as a major upgrade (my installer is always picked up as a minor upgrade :()??? my assemblies are .net...

1. Change the Product Code and keep the Upgrade Code
2. Add a new Major Upgrade entry in Upgrade View and configure to best meet your requirements.
