XML Update

Hello,
I have a question about how InstallShield updates XML files. I have 1 line in my web.config that needs to be updated upon install, but for some reason the XML gets much more then that. The XML file gets a bunch of reformatting done to it and everything changed to using closing tags. ie. is changed to

Is there anyway I can keep InstallShield from updating every part of the XML file and just modify what I need to change.

The option to disable indenting and other formatting is available in the current version of InstallShield. I can't remember exactly when it was added (probably IS2010 or IS2011), but if upgrading is an option, this is one solution.
