SQL '05 Prereq fail on VSS Writer install

I am trying to install a SQL 2005 Prereq as part of my install and most times it works fine. If a computer already has an instance of SQL 2005 from another pierce of software, it causes our SQL 2005 instance to fail on the SQL VSS Writer piece (sqlwriter.msi).

If I manually uninstall vss writer that was layed down by another intsall and then run my install, SQL 2005 installs without error.

I need a solution other than manually installing vss writer; has anyone else encountered and solved this issue?

Well, I experienced the same problem... but I did not solve it until now. And I can not rebuild this problem... it occours nearly random 😞
