Major upgrade - preserving data
I have been using ISExpress 2008 for about four months and am now planning a first major upgrade. The upgrade needs to preserve a database file.
I have drafted two custom actions which call exe files. The first is to copy the database file before the installation gets properly underway and the second is to restore the database into the required folder for the application.
I guess this scenario is fairly common?
Is there any known best practice guide as to:
- What stage to copy the data?
- What stage to restore the data?
- What testing and validation to carry out during installation in order to ensure user data is not lost?
Thanks in adavance for any guidance.

While I can't assist with any steps that might be helpful to validate the file, you probably want to back up the file After Setup Progress dialog and then restore it it any time after this dialog as your product will have already performed the major upgrade by that point.
