Fourth Version Field?

IOA-000047792 (Basic MSI, InstallScript MSI)

You can now enter a fourth field in the Product Version setting of the General Information. In InstallShield 2009, only three fields could be entered.

According to the release notes, the feature/fix above is included. The wording is a bit vague. Does this mean upgrades can now be triggered by four digit version numbers or will the installer still recognize only the first three?

Windows Installer will still only check the first three fields for product version. However, since it never disallowed the fourth field, the IDE now also allows a fourth field to be entered.

You can definately ENTER 4 digit version numbers with IS2010, however, the buildin version checking, actions, etc don't honor it. You have to replicate the cheks, setting of updatemode, etc all yourself - for installs, updates, and maintenance installs.

I know - we've had to do it.

If you think of it logically the versioning should be:

major.minor.revision.build

Therefore the build number is not an upgrade, it's just the same version churned out of the build server again and is really on for your own reference. Build numbers are an internal numbering working towards a release revision. If you need to upgrade then it becomes a new revision.
