Correct folder locations

I'm trying to work out the best practice locations for various components of my installation. I have mapping and terrain data, some Excel spreadsheets with databases that generally don't need to be user-editable but sometime will be, executables, assemblies and so on. Some 64bit, some 32bit, some don't care. There now seems to be a bewildering choice of Program Files, Common Files, Appdata (per user and global) Program Data. The InstallShield Help mentions the existence of these locations bit doesn't really say what they should be used for. In other places I see recommendations that everything should be installed into Program Files.

Can anyone point me to a useful guide please?

As a supplemental question, is there any reason why 32bit executables shouldn't be put in Program Files (not x86) on a 64bit machine?
