Snow Inventory Agent For Windows

Skip Feed
  1. Hi folks, I have questions about user import, both automatic and manual.

    1) If the automatic DataImport is not running (Import Service), where does SNOW get user data from? Via the Inventory Agent on the clients? Where does the agent get the information from? How does it put it together?

    2) The automatic DataImport states that it is user metadata. So if a user does not yet exist, it will not be created automatically, is that correct?

    3) Why is a non-existent organization created but the user is not, wouldn't that be a wash?

    4) I noticed the following article when deleting users:

Snow License Manager: How to delete multiple users

The article states that there are 3 options, but the page only describes one option, manual deletion.

Unfortunately, even this is only partially possible, as the Expand button is no longer available after 50 pages. We had > 200 page users, deleting 20 pages at once works, but it still takes a while. Can anyone confirm the missing button?

    Thank you Steffen

    • Hi Steffen,

please be aaware of SLM still being a License Management tool.

SLM focusses primarily on user data as needed for exactly this purpose.

This simply means: a user that does not use an inventoried computer is of no interest to SLM.

      To answer your quesions:

      1) some information is fetched from Active Directory (if enabled), some information comes from the Agent. This is very basic information though.

      2) Correct. Users are not automatically created. Same applies to computers.

      3) Organisations are a Snow-internal structure. Users, as mentioed above, historically a kind of assets.

      4) the maximum number of lines per page in SLM is 5000 and can be defined in the SMACC.

Anything that exceeds this number will require multiplke delete operations.

As an alternative activate the User quarantine options in SMACC or delete users in the database using the stored procedure dbo.UserDelete.

      Hope this helps

  2. Why does Microsoft 365 Defender not recognize that the Snow Inventory Agent for Windows hat been updated?

I updated the Snow Inventory Agent for Windows to Version 7.0.0 shortly after the version was released. I use the "Agent Updates" feature in Snow Inventory to automate the update. However, when I check the Microsoft 365 Defender Portal, I still get the message that I need to update all agents to fix vulnerabilites like CVE-2024-1149, although the Release Notes of Versio 7.0.0 state that this vulnerability has been fixed.

Any idea what to do? It seems that the version and install date is not updated in the Windows Control Panel under "Programs and Features", maybe this makes MS Defender believe that no update has been installed.

    • Snow Inventory Server deployment tool doesn't have the capability to modify registry value / Control Panel Application Names. Snow console it will show updated successfully but other tools will capture the old data from endpoints.

  3. How Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) recognition is done in snow software?

    Hi everyone,

I read from the documentation that the agent needs information in the configuration file whether the scanned device is part of VDI and the default setting is with a value of false. Why doesn't snow software automatically detect if a device is VDI? Is it somehow related to their licensing and we are not able to tell if a device is VDI? The current solution is very manual and requires knowing what is VDI and what is not. That's why it wonders to me why it is not recognized automatically.

    • Good question. Actually, VDI is a very vague term now that could describe a simple desktop VM or a whole virtual desktop infrastructure. I could never find clearly explained what Snow uses the acronym "VDI" for exactly or what effect does it have on an endpoint.

If someone finds the doc that explains it unambiguously, please post the link here.

  6. Does anyone have hardware requirements for the Snow Inventory Agent for any or all OS Platforms? I need this info for the performance testing after installing the snow agent to make sure it will not cause any issues during mass deployment of 30K machines.

Memory allocation, processes, CPU utilization, etc.

If anyone can help much appreciated your help in advance!
