Bjorn S asked a question.
Hi!
I have created a local application with a custom rule for identification. The rule works and installations shows up in SLM - but no usage. I have verified with a user that the exe-file which the rule is created from shows up as a running process in Task Manager, with the user listed as the one running the process. However - the application is not started by the user clicking on the exe, it's started trough a cmd file containing some other parameters. Idk if this is the problem.
Any tips why there is no metering data for my application?
Thanks
Best regards,
Björn
I see no reason why it would not work as you did (unless the app runs as a service, I think I remember the agent does not track apps that are not running in a user context, but from your description it seems like it is a standard app)
Are you successfully tracking metering for other applications?
Also, what happens if the user starts the application by clicking on the EXE?
Yes, it's running as an app not as a service. Yes, we collect metering data for other applications, not sure if we do for local apps...
I'll try launching the exe itself and see if thats the problem, thanks for the suggestion!
Hi,
what you could do is to generate a snowpack on the computer after having used the application and then take a look into the snowpack with the "Snow Inventory File Extractor" that is part of the Snow Inventory Server Installation.
You should find the Metering information at the very end of the invv3x.xml section, looking like this:
I didn't even know that you can unpack snowpacks... I'll try this, thanks!
Update - I told the user to launch the exe, but still no metering data. Checked the snowpack after this and I can see the application listed as <Software Name="Appname" ... > but NOT listed as one of the <Metering Name=> apps.
So that means that the agent doesn't collect any metering data for the app? And that should have nothing to do with the rule I created since the agent doesn't event catch any metering data?
I have opened a support case but Snow support wants me to send the snowpack and I cannot do that for data security reasons so I don't think they can help me anymore. They sent me a link on how to create bundles, for some reason.
I guess this app just can't be measured then.

Depending on what the app is, you can install the agent on a sandbox (Windows Sandbox) and scan it there, which would allow you to provide a snowpack without it containing any company data -- assuming data security would allow that since the only thing 'leaving the organisation' would be the local app name, but again, depends what the app is
