Does anybody else get "MessageBus" errors from SLM?

We're on SLM 9.9. For the past few weeks SLM seems to have crashed most every morning. Even after a server reboot it seems to take about an hour before it comes back online. But eventually it does start back up again. We always get the same error in the log:

EXCEPTION: An error occurred while attempting to automatically activate registration 'Activator = RebusMessageBus (ReflectionActivator), Services = [SnowSoftware.LicenseManager.MessageBus.IMessageBus, AutoActivate], Lifetime = Autofac.Core.Lifetime.RootScopeLifetime, Sharing = Shared, Ownership = OwnedByLifetimeScope'.

Has anybody else had this problem? We have a ticket open with support, but I wonder if we are the only ones to experience this.

Thanks, David

    Hi _David

Most cases it could be issue with tblComputerHardware where once of the columns contains invalid data

    • Thanks. We noticed today that at the same moment we see the "MessageBus" error in the log we also get an error in the event log that seems to refer to the new visual DUJ indicator feature. This makes sense because this problem only started for us after the 9.9 upgrade. It also makes sense because SLM seems to go offline first thing in the morning when the first users start to hit the site. Perhaps the outage is somehow caused when SLM tries to get the latest DUJ information each morning? Certainly all that evidence seems to match...

  • Hi David,

As Detlev already mentioned, and searching Snow Globe for 'rebus', this KB article seems to discuss the same error (and mentions checking tblComputerHardware for invalid XML).

Not 100% sure its the same issue as you are encountering as I would imagine the architecture of SLM is routing a number of components through the same messaging/queuing layer of Rebus and therefore if something breaks (e.g. in new version of SLM) then it amounts to the same general error.

Is there anything else contained in the stack trace of the error. I note from the KB article, that particular error seemed to originate from calls to  /IDX/InventoryConfigUpdate.ashx (e.g. attempted delivery of legacy web metering rules?)

    • We also don't think it's quite the same issues that is described in the KB. However, we have just noticed that at exactly the same time the MessageBus error appears in the log, we get this in the Event Log:

      Exception type: NullReferenceException

Exception message: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

        at SnowSoftware.LicenseManager.Web.App_Code.DataUpdateJobStatusHttpModule.Init(HttpApplication context) in d:\Program Files\Snow Software\Snow License Manager\Web\App_Code\DataUpdateJobStatusHttpModule.cs:line 33

at System.Web.HttpApplication.RegisterEventSubscriptionsWithIIS(IntPtr appContext, HttpContext context, MethodInfo[] handlers)

at System.Web.HttpApplication.InitSpecial(HttpApplicationState state, MethodInfo[] handlers, IntPtr appContext, HttpContext context)

        at System.Web.HttpApplicationFactory.GetSpecialApplicationInstance(IntPtr appContext, HttpContext context)

        at System.Web.Hosting.PipelineRuntime.InitializeApplication(IntPtr appContext)

The timing looks too precise to be a coincidence. So we suspect that is related.

      • Hello David,

May you please share the steps to fix if that issue was resolved.

      • Hi,

More recent versions of SLM seem to have this problem less frequently for us, but it still happens occasionally. So far, the only thing we can do is wait. After an hour or so of downtime the problem goes away and SLM goes back to normal.

So if you're not on the latest version of SLM, applying some updates might help. That's the best suggestion I have, sorry.

        David
