Why might I be unable to upgrade to Snow License Manager Enterprise Edition v9.16.00?

I have just been able to upgrade to v9.15.00 this morning. Once installed, ISnow error message rebooted the server then tried to upgrade to v9.16.00 but it has failed multiple times.

I am just getting the error message 'update could not be installed. Instructions have been rolled back'

  • Have you taken SLM offline (IIS) for the update?

What does the Update Service log say?

  • Logs would definitely be helpful here. That's a pretty 'bleak' error in that you can get it for literally anything!

    C:\Program Files\Snow Software\Logs

  • This can have several reasons.

Like Laim mentioned you need to check Snow Update Service GUI log.

    • In case it is a download error, then you can retry or request the offline package.
    • In case it is an error in SQL execution you better should contact support
    • In case of problems creating or starting a service, you can check the log of that service and see if you can solve the issue

Very often it is a download error, although your message more looks like an install error

  • Take a look at the logs files posted here by the SUS:

    C:\Program Files\Snow Software\Logs\UpdateService

You'll want to see what the UpdateServiceGUI log file says.

I've tried on several 9.16.0 upgrades and get errors from:

11-21 20:01:00,824 [InstallationWorker] DEBUG SnowSoftware.Update.ServiceControlWrapper [(null)] - Name: SnowLicensing. Status: Stopped.

2021-11-21 20:01:30,829 [InstallationWorker] ERROR SnowSoftware.Update.ServiceControlWrapper [(null)] - The service, SnowLicensing, cannot be started.

  • I have just checked the logs as you guys mentioned above, this is the error message I got on one of the installation failures:

2021-11-19 12:54:55,683 [InstallationWorker] ERROR SnowSoftware.Update.ProductUpdate [(null)] - Could not install update v 9.16.00 for Snow License Manager Enterprise Edition (UR# 489).

    • I have seen this exact behaviour. You can rename that file to say log4net.old and it'll progress but then complain of another DLL being in use.

I tried this renaming trick but gave up when i got to the 7th .dll to rename.

I have yet to try an offline package to see if this gets around the issue.

      • This error message was obtained whilst doing an offline package. That is the way I always do our upgrades and have never saw an issue like this

    • Had this problem last week, if you turn off every service before starting the update it should get passed it. If that doesn't work, you could go down the rename route but that's pretty tedious!

      • Took the words out of my mouth! I will give that a go tomorrow then, thank you!
