New Web Applications

Has anybody tried to define a new Web Application in SLM recently?

We're currently on SLM v8.3.06 ... but I think this might have been a problem with v8.3.05 as well...

If we go to Home -> Administration -> Web Applications and use the "Add web application" button it all looks fine.  However, we can no longer find the web application when we search applications.  If we search for applications where the Manufacturer is equal to "web application" they don't appear.

All our historical web applications still show up, but new ones don't seem to appear.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks, David

  • Hi David,  If the old rules keep reporting in, but the new ones are lacking usage, I'd say that there is an issue with updating the webapps.config file on your agents. (Old definitions will remain, but no new ones will be added.)  Can you verify that you do have a webapps.config on your agents, and that it actually contains the latest rules?  (You can open these in a text editor and search for the pattern you added in SLM.)  If the new patterns are missing in this file you might have problems with the IDX link from  agent to Inventory Server,  or from Inventory Server to the License Manager Web.  On the other hand, if ALL web metering usage is outdated you might want to see if there was a proxy implemented lately. The old web metering feature does not handle proxies very well. It will stop reporting web usage as it only sees the proxy, not the real endpoint.

    • Hi ‌, Actually, this isn't even about detection.  We're using the "Also include not installed/used" filter set to yes and our new web applications don't appear when we search for them.  They also don't appear in the SLM SMACC under "Application definitions".  Our older Web Applications all appear in those places ... but not the ones we have created from the end of November onwards... • Hi ‌, With the "Also include not installed/used" filter set to yes, the applications should appear even when there is no detection ... so even if they didn't appear in the webapps.config they should still show up in SLM... However, I have just stopped and restarted an agent and the newly created Web Applications do indeed appear in the webapps.config XML file.  So the information is getting to the agents ... but because no Application definition has been created we don't see them in SLM I think... • Ah, I see now.   Applications based on the old web metering are not created until the first computer reports in with some usage for that web app rule.  It is a bit backwards, but that's why you cannot see any applications in SLM yet. The flow is a bit different than normal DIS created applications.  - you add your rules as URL:S in the SLM web gui, but these are not "real application definitions" in the system yet.  - Your URLS:s are stored in the  webapps.config on your client computers.  - The pattern is connected to a GUID, also found in the webapps.config. This is a random value, unique for your env.  - Once computer has reported in some useage on this pattern/ guid,  and the DUJ has completed, there will be a new application created matching your guid and the name of your web rule.

            • Thanks ‌, I was certain that in the past they showed up straight away, without needing to wait for detection and the DUJ ... but maybe that's my mistake. Thanks for making such a good explanation, it's really useful to understand the process.  I'm glad that I asked this question now  .  Thanks again. Regards, David
