Archiving a large number of computers

I recall (I think) seeing this addressed before but searching is not pulling up anything.

Is there a mechanism to Archive a large number of Quarantined computers, from the backend perhaps? With over 15,000 to Archive the Web GUI isn't cutting it. Spins spins spins then crash. I tried narrowing it down by various columns, e.g., Model or Name but apparently it still attempts to pull all 15,000+ up when "Edit All" is selected.

Any suggestions on how to accomplish this are greatly appreciated.

  • See I am having issues with Archiving Quarantined devices - but not with Inactives. Interesting.  I wonder if we have some setting in our SMACC preventing us from doing this?

Hi Thomas, it is possible to archive computers using the import function.  export your full list of computers from Snow into excel. in your excel sheet identify and delete the computers you want to archive save the excel sheet  in SLM, home, import or in Snow Management and Configuration Center, select import then select update existing computers.  browse to your excel sheet and click next in step two of the import you will see an option called Obsolete computer action with a drop down. select Archive from the drop down.  This will then change the status of any computer not in your import file to Archive. (BE CAREFUL this can not be reversed!!) Always make sure you have a back up of your databases first, This process, depending on the number of computers, can take a while. I would also recommend you try this out first on either a test system or with just one computer. regards, Jelle

  • Performing this task using the "All Computers" report, filtering the Status column on "Inactive", select computers and then choosing "Archive Computers" under the blue snowman icon, seems to work just as well. However, trying to perform this same operation on selected Quarantined computers, I get an error  that says "Select computer from the list". Are we not able to Archive Quarantined computers this way? Only Inactive computers?

    • Todd, I have since been doing it the way you describe by selecting status "Quarantined" then "Archive Computers". Until today we did not have the setting to place computers in Status of "Inactive". Therefore we had to be mindful of the quarantine date as to not Archive anything too soon.
