VM without physical Host

Hi all,

few of our virtual servers are listed as "not inventoried" in DC section...although the virtual servers themselves are inventoried and also shown in computer list (without information of physical host/cluster): I already deleted them in SMACC and SLM, but they still don't find their matching counterpart in DC section. Any Ideas how to fix that?

Best regards,

Uwe

  • More on this. Running the above query gives me the following results (hostname obfuscated in vmName are = cHostname). Red Boxes: missing match due to different IP address Blue Boxes: matching IP address exists, but apparently Snow discards IPs starting with 169.x.x.x Green Boxes: Tricky ones. Those machines are actually inventoried: ....are flagged as not inventoried in Datacenter&Cluster view: ...but are flagged as  inventoried  in " Physical and virtual servers per datacenter" report :

      • VMware SIM connector sends info about the ESXi nodes. ESXi host nodes are seen as computers by Snow.
        • I noticed a change in the way the VMWare Connector reports after upgrading SIM from 5.14 to 5.15. It now shows the connector configuration name with a Sim_vSphere_ before it.  When I filter by that I only get the operating system reporting as VMWare VCenter Server and one per connector.  We have not upgraded to INV server 9.x yet. I hope to see more granularity and reporting for DataCenter in the new version. Soon....

        • Hi Marco, You might want to check what is actually happening in your Snow Inventory. Previously i faced similar issue. My VM Guest and ESXI host having the same hostname. And that vm guest is actually sitting on the same physical machine. Due to that, Snow Inventory having some hard time to properly inventory the agent vs sim data. It ends up either merging those 2 entry or creating 2 or 3 entry that inventoried each others information. (e.g. IP or OS info).

          • Hi Shahrin, thanks for the suggestion but I have around 240 VMs in that situation that are spread over different customers (around 25). None of those VMs have the same hostname as their host and at least one of the host is MS Hyper-V. In my opinion this is a code-related issue to be searched in the snow matching algorithm and not an issue originated by bad data.

  • Thank you all for your answers so far! I've been pretty busy during the past days, so I wasn't really able to follow the discussion. I will open a support ticket within the next days, and keep you updated. Best regards, Uwe
  • Tony Coughlin (Flexera Software)

Hi Uwe, I did notice this fix in the release notes for - Snow Inventory Server 6.0.5: Data normalization of IP addresses has been enhanced to manage multiple IP addresses reported for the same machine. This improvement ensures that virtual machines can be correctly matched to their host, and inventory data collected from these machines will be correctly shown in Snow License Manager views and reports (PRB0041919). Release date: April 24, 2019 Best Regards, Tony
