Can the clients be configured to pick up items from the registry?

Afternoon!

Does anyone know If there is a way to set up a config so we can pick up image information from the registry on the PC?

We are hosted and do not have access to the SMACC so will not be able to do this ourselves but can request it if it's a possibility!

Many Thanks.

Gemma

  • Just adding this since I think it is relevant: During a recent contact with Snow, we learned that the scanning of custom registry keys is now performed by a PowerShell script in conjunction with an Excel CSV file. We were told that the declaration of custom registry entries in the SnowAgent.config file is not supported anymore. The file contains the list of custom registry entries and the script reads through the Excel CSV file and reports if the key was found or not. The files are: And this is how the Excel CSV file looks: The "DKV;50" at the end of each line refers to data described in this Snow KB article . Regards

Hi ‌, thanks for sharing. Looks like your excel file is still a csv file. Could you validate it, by just displaying File Extensions?  Thanks Oliver
      • Indeed, it is a CSV file. I updated the post to show this. Thanks

Hi Samuel, while the method described to gather registry keys (using the powershell script and the .csv file) is certainly convenient and recommended, I need to point out that declaring the custom registry entries for the agent to gather in the snowagent.config file *is* a supported method.
  • Thank you for all your responses. This goes way over my head but I have passed all your replies onto our config guys who are looking into it. Much appreciated!

Hi Gemma, as soon as you collect the data from the agent side (agent config or os script), you’ll be able to query a present it on SLM, based on SLM reports‌:     Hope this help! Jorge
  • Hi Gemma, Perhaps this link might help . It shows how to run a Powershell script when the agent scans, and can report values back to Snow. So it sounds like what you need should be possible... I hope that helps. Regards, David
  • Hi Gemma, In addition, there is an option to scan specific registry values. The catch is that if you use it, it overrides the default values already scanned by the agent so if you want to add a registry value to the scan, then you have to specify all your registry values you want to scan. So as David mentions, this is definitely possible, even without adding PowerShell to the recipe. Below is an example with 2 keys and multiple values:   <Registry enabled="true">     <Query>       <Key recursive="true">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server</Key>       <Value>Edition</Value>       <Value>EditionType</Value>       <Value>CSDVersionNumber</Value>       <Value>Version</Value>       <Value>ProductVersion</Value>     </Query>     <Query>       <Key recursive="false">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion</Key>       <Value>ProductName</Value>     </Query>   </Registry> Regards

Hi all, I would recommend using the powershell script. While changing the agent configuration as shown by Samuel would work, but it would overwrite the default configuration for the registry keys, thus preventing those from being picked up and ultimately this can interfere with some software recognition (notably, the correct edition for Microsoft SQL Server, which uses the keys in the example). If you prefer to follow this road, anyway, you can ask Snow Support to help you configure the agent to include all the default registry keys in addition to the custom ones you require. Hope this helps Best regards

Hi Gemma, Yes it is possible for the snow agent to scan and collect additional Registry values.. depending ont he version of your client there are two methods. With the 3.7x version of the client this is done through the client.ini file. with the latest agent version 5.x this is achieved through a power-shell script.  The data collected is then stored in the Snow inventory where it can be reported on. Because you are on a hosted platform you will need to get assistance from your hosting partner to get the ini file updated or the powershell script created. Your hosting partner will also then have to setup a regular schedules report to send to you as you won't have access to the inventory console or alternatively they will have to create a stored procedure(possibly with Snow's assistance) that moves the registry key values from inventory into user defined fields in the Snow web front end. once it is in Snow License Manager you can report on the values using the standard views and reports. so i would recommend you reach out to your hosting partner and get them to assist you with it. Kind regards, Jelle
