Does anyone have experience with metering Think-Cell?

Hi all,

I am wondering if the usage of Think-Cell (PowerPoint AddOn) can be metered with Snow.

Since Think-Cell is more like a PlugIn it might be used any time I open PowerPoint?

Never the less SLM shows only a few Users for all installations in our environment. That could be correct if the other installations are not used (or if they also don't even use PowerPoint at all). But I have an installation too, and even though I am using it, I never appear under the list of Think-Cell Users. And I know about other users who definately are using it too but also don't appear under the Think-Cell user list.

That makes me doubt that the metering data for Think-Cell is reliable, and I wonder what makes Snow sometimes say it was used and sometimes not.

Best regards,

Uwe

  • Community Manager (Flexera Software)

Hello Uwe, there is a way to use a customized PowerShell script for the Snow Inventory Agents to collect more technical information ( no metering ) and then to use a customized report in Snow License Manager to get an overview of these details.  Please consult your designated Snow contact for more information. Greetings, Roland
    • Thanks Roland! I still wonder why some installations appear with actual usage data in Snow without customized PowerShell scripts... Best regards, Uwe
      • Hi Uwe, Did this got resolved? Because we face the same issue. We see no usage or Runs inside the application of users which use the Think-Cell a lot Thanks Erwin
        • We raised this issue with Snow because we noticed the Think-cell metric has changed from user based to installation based and metering was no longer available. This was what they said: ""After doing some research regarding the application Think-Cell, we quickly realized that the software is a plug-in and doesn't have an own executable file. Think-Cell runs through PowerPoint and not by itself. We have unfortunately based the executable file recognition on additional files which was completely incorrect and has now been changed. We won't be able to display any metering for the Think-Cell applications since it's a plug-in, but we will be able to present the customer with their installations of the software." Which means that the usage that your team were seeing before were incorrect usage because our rules that were setup were not right. SRS team have now change the rules to be correct and hence you are not seeing the usage. There is nothing much we can do here unfortunately.

          • Hi Claribel,  Thanks for your respond. I am not a license consultant, but technical. How did you solve this concerning the licensing of Think-Cell? When I take a look at their license agreement:  Order new licenses :: think-cell   they state that it is a user based model. Did you use named user licensing? Thanks again Erwin
