  • Also, I have just found that, you have to configure and apply downgrade rights to the Windows Server Datacenter product if not already done. A very good explanation can be found here   hope this help rgds Davide

Hi John, I hope I can help you. For this I need some more information about your environment.   These 8 Blades are your only ESX Hosts and you have no other physical systems with Windows Server DC on it in your environment? You are sure that all Windows Server Datacenter 2016 and Windows Server Datacenter 2012R2 only on that 2 Blades who are licensed for 2016 DC?   It looks like that there are some other machines with Windows Server Datacenter 2016 in your environment. The 6 Windows Server 2008 R2 DC Licenses have no Software Assurance? What kind of licenses they are, you put it in a VMware Subscription Agreement? Are they OEM licenses or Volume licenses? Best regards Ines

    • Yes, DC is not installed on any other Physical Servers. Historically we had 6 ESX Blades onto which we installed hosts running 2008 R2 DC. 2 Cpu x 6 = 12 Processor Licences. A few years later we purchased 2 more ESX Blades and we purchased 2016 DC. 2 Cpu X 8 Core X 2 svrs = 32 Core Licences. I'm as confident as I can be that I have added these correctly into snow now!! We purchased 2016DC to utilise downgrade rights to 2012 until such time as we were happy to start using Windows Server 2016, which we now are.   I've been put in charge of correcting SLM to accurately show our licence position and correct subscription information so I've yet to correctly determine where/how they were purchased.

Hi John, Thank you for the information, normaly it should work fine. It looks verry interesting. Lets have a look at the Windows Server 2016 / 2012R2 Datacenter. The last two lines are most interesting for me, they said license requirement for Windows Server 2016 Datacenter is 384 and for Windows Server 2012R2 Datacenter is 40. How many Windows Server 2016 / 2012R2 Datacenter do you have installed? According to your screenshot they should not be more than 8, if they are only on these both maschines but it wouldn't match with the license requirement. Two more question I would have, are all 8 Blades in the same cluster and HA/ vmotion/ DRS is activated? Best regards Ines

        • Hi Ines We have eleven virtual 2012 Servers and 18 virtual 2016 servers All 8 blades are in the same ha cluster and I’ve assigned the cluster to both licences (2008R2DC and 2016DC) Yes we are running HA V Motion. The numbers above are taken from VMWare, however I’m also seeing the new blades (which explains the above) are not scanning into Inventory since August so I hope to have that fixed tomorrow. If anything that will make the true picture even worse. The numbers from SLM (currently) are as follows 2008R2 = 27 2012 = 6 2016 = 15 Regards John

        • As expected the licence position has got worse today following some config changes on the Snow Integration Manager. Can’t see where I’m going wrong.

  • OK so I think I have done this correctly but it still shows I'm massively underlicenced.  See attached pics. Have I totalled correctly.  We have 6 Windows Server 2008 R2 DC (2cpu) Licences to which I assigned 1 blade per licence. and 2 Windows Server 2016 DC (Core 2) to which I have assigned both the other 2 blades I have done the downgrade rights for all Applications (2016DC, 2012DC and 2008R2DC)
