Datacenter License updation in SLM
I have Windows Server Standard 2012 R2 license (Qty 4) for 2 Processor and I want to insert it in snow but I am confused how I can go about it. I have selected Number of Processor in Metric option and how will I insert the license, I have 4 license for 2 processor will it be 8 (4X2) or I can only insert 4? Also I have edited application and set it to Number of Processors and what is minimum number of licenses?  Also I have 174 physical server so this license will go on them as Windows datacenter license has unlimited VM? I require help in inserting this license in snow to check compliance and want best practice ( I have attach snow images) .

  • Did you check the Metric in your Windows Server Datacenter applications. For Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter it should be set to Based on total processors In the appended screenshot you can see what we set. If this is not set, then you should edit the application, and change Metric and Minimum number of licenses

Hi ‌, The proper way to add processor license is to "Assign" them to a data center or individual servers. If you assign them to a data center and want all the VM's to be licenses in a unlimited fashion you must cover the total number of all physical servers in that data center. Example Screenshot: 1) Add enough processors licenses to cover the data center to be licensed.  2) Search for Data center to assign the license 3) Modify the the application "Windows Server R2 Datacenter"   4) No run "Recalculate Compliance" This should properly apply the rules.

    • Hi Marc, Thank you very much for you reply and information that you have provided is really helpful. I have selected Datacenter/Cluster but it only showing 3 Datacenter and to cross check this I have pulled a report Physical and virtual servers per datacenter. This report has all Datacenter name under which all physical & VM details are available and Datacenter count is more than 3. I have tried to select Physical server and it is only showing 22 which is not correct do you know what the issue may be or am I doing something wrong?

Hi ‌, When you add "Assignments" to license like processors and cores. The search function only looks for machines physical or virtual that have the product you are trying to license.
        • Ohhh Thanks Marc i understood it now my last question is regarding the license that i have asked on the earlier chain. For MS Windows Server Data-center 2012 R2 license that i have is Processor based license which means 1 datacenter license=2 Processor license so i have 4 license available how will i insert them in Quantity field will it be 4 or should i multiply them 4 license x 2 Processor= 8 and insert them.

          • Hi Kiran, With SLM 8 Snow changed the way to add the amount of licenses. Now there is only one field "Quantity". For processor based licenses you now need to add the total amount of licensed processors, in your example quantity=8 For core based licenses you need to add the total amount of licensed cores But in case of a Microsoft audit you need to explain this to your auditor. The auditor has to validate your license amount in SLM against Micosoft's MLS. MLS will only list 4 licenses in your example. I recently needed to explain this to our auditor, then it was ok.

  • Hi I had already changed the Application metrics to Number of processor but still it is not working. If datacenter is showing 6 Processor and I am assigning 6 licenses it should not show overassigment irrespective of VM had it is unlimited VM access. I have 100 licenses and I am assigning it to a DC but Processor count for each.
