How to Identify Print Servers

We are moving to Microsoft Universal (Cloud) Printing and starting to decommission physical, followed by Virtual Print Servers.

I know there is a report for "Printers per Computer", which helps somewhat. But what I am looking for is a way to identify all devices that are acting as a print server.

I know print spooler runs that function, but has anyone else found a way to identify print servers?

Thank you.

  • We have tried in the past to look for similar information and we came up with a few potential solutions (we ended up not implementing in the end so I can't help with what's the easiest or most practical😅 )

    • Use standard server names: the downside is that if somehow the standard is not followed, your detection fails
    • Use a local script (signed) that will detect if the Print Server role is enabled and report back into SLM as a registry record
    • Use a local script run by a scheduled task (elevated) to detect if the Print Server role is enabled and save the result in the LocalLow folder. Then use an unsigned script run by the Snow agent to read the result and report as a registry record that will get pulled into SLM (a bit convoluted but it works)
    • The cleanest (but not safest) is to run a remote query from your SLM server and store the results in an Excel spreadsheet. Then import the data against a custom field using the web configurator
