the obvious reason is, that Snow Inventory and Snow License Manager are licensed based on "inventoried devices", that means basically all the devices you see in the Inventory Admin Console. This includes the ESX servers. It excludes devices "not reported".

Any idea how to cover these licenses in agreement/license way? As much as possible I want to cover all units with the bought licenses to see a nice compliance overview. For example: if we buy 10.000 agent licenses for 9000 server/endpoint + 1000 ESX, then I'll be able to cover all server/endpoints (9000). In my compliance overview all 9000 will be covered, but I still have 1000 available licenses, since I cannot "connect" the 1000 licenses to the ESX servers. But in real, I cannot cover the next endpoint (number 9001) because I consumed all 10.000 licenses.

My point is: I don't see where to license these 1000 ESX servers since there is no agent on it, but consuming agent licenses. What obvious thing do I miss?

the main point is: you are not buying "Agent Licenses", you buy licenses for "inventoried devices".

The other point is: Snow did never manage to get their own licenseing straight in SLM.

• SLM Server and SINV Server are set to "License required", but you actually don't pay for the servers. But you'll get a license for e.g. "Snow License Manager Enterprise Edition".
• Other licenses that you pay for will never show up as requirement, like VMO, SaaS,

If y<ou want to get this measuerd better, you would have to add a Custom Compare Value Type like "Inventoried Devices" and then write a SQL script that counts the inventoried items in the SINV database and writes this into the custom compare value.

Then maybe use these for the Snow License Manager Server and Snow Inventory Server applications and set the Snow Inventory Agent to "no license required".

I hope Snow will pick it up and solve this issue. Maybe I have to raise this as an idea together with the the request for a portal to add all licenses in one place... should be helpful too ;-)
