Huge increase in DUJ times after Snow Inventory 6.7

Hi,

Has anyone else noticed a huge increase in DUJ times after installing Snow Inventory 6.7? Last week we installed SIS 6.7 in our test environment, and our DUJ times are now 3 times longer. So we have increased from an average of 2 hours 41 min to 7 hours 49m.

I wondered if it is just us? We were hoping for a decrease in DUJ times because of the new Garbage Collector (which looks like a huge improvement).

Thanks, David

  • Hi David,

SIS 6.7 is running in Prod now since 8 days and in test around 3 weeks.

I did not see that heavy increase in DUJ time.

DUJ time is constantly growing since around 6 month from around 1:30 hour to around 2:00

But it is possible that this is also dependant on our environment. Difficult to find.

  • Hi David

Have you already rebuilt the DB index of the Snow Inventory database?

There you can check the whole thing again for sure if there are any problems.

    • Thanks. We already have routine tasks to maintain the indexes. However, over the weekend we scheduled a task to disable to SIS service during the DUJ. After doing that the DUJ times returned to normal. It looks like SIS 6.7 is having a bigger impact on the database than the previous version. After figuring that out we remembered that we were also having reports that SLM had become slow during peak times (in the same environment).

So we think that when large numbers of snowpacks arrive the database is coming under more strain than before. This would explain the jump in DUJ times since we upgraded to SIS 6.7.

      • That is correct. We see here also with the new Snow Inventory Server a significant additional load for the database server.

Sometimes snowpack files are not processed in the first run due to a timeout.

It sometimes seems like a short fall asleep on the Inventory Server.

      • It's good to have confirmation, thanks. The performance increase in SIS 6.7 seems impressive! We would now like a way to throttle it back, so the impact on our database server isn't quite as high.

      • Hi David,

So are you saying that Snow Inventory is now processing files too quickly which is leading to additional load on the server which is affecting SLM?

Might be possible that additional/altered indexes on inv.DataSoftware could lead to differing performance/behaviour...comparing our current production environment running v6.6.3 vs our test platform running v6.7.0 I can see a few changes...

SnowIndexes663SnowIndexes670Could maybe review database activity when lots of files are coming in to see what specifically is causing significant load (although by the sounds of it you already have).

Have you 'tweaked' any DMC settings? Could maybe try tuning the MaxDegreeOfConcurrency setting so as not to process quite so many files and in turn reduce the load on the database?

      • Yes, my gut feeling is that faster file processing was having an impact, but I have not confirmed that's the cause of SLM having problems. But it seems likely to me because it happened at the same time we noticed the DUJ getting very slow.

We haven't tweaked the MaxDegreeOfConcurrency setting, we'll have the default value. So having a lower setting might help. That's a good idea. Thanks.
