Active Directory Discovery with Snow Inventory 6.5

We have an instance of Snow Inventory that only does Active Directory Discovery, which has been running fine for a long time now.

However, since the upgrade to Inventory 6.5 we notice that the service restarts itself every few minutes. We have a ticket open with Snow Support, but it's difficult to diagnose since there's nothing in the logs to help.

Has anybody else noticed problems with Active Directory Discovery on Snow Inventory 6.5?

We have just downgraded it to Inventory 6.4 and early indications are good - it seems to be running fine again. Thanks!

David

  • UPDATE: switching the executable back to the 6.4 version seems stable again. It's has been running nicely with no restarts. It looks like a problem with AD Discovery in 6.5, at least in our environment.

  • Hi Guys

No I haven't seen that one - 6.5 has actually been a much more stable version for my customers..... any errors in the windows event logs David??

    • Unfortunately not, literally nothing helpful in the logs. But manually rolling back to 6.4 has been stable, so something in 6.5 definitely puts our AD Discovery process in a restart loop.

    • The Event Log reports an error in KernelBase.dll, so not much we can troubleshoot any further

  • Our SIS 6.4--> SIS 6.5 seems to have gone well. I can confirm that AD is working on all our SGs now; where historically we had a few SG's that had the NetIPHelper.dll issue which prevent ingestion of some AD computer objects.

What are the symptoms of your SIS 6.5.0 issue? Is it just that AD runs long and restarts? My understanding is that in 6.5.0 SNOW changed the "way" that AD discovery functions. Thus, maybe try turning off AD discovery in 6.4.0 upgrading and then seeing if 6.5.0 works?

    Anyways good luck!

    • Thanks @Kris Wong, the symptoms are that the service constantly restarts every few minutes. The service would run for just a few minutes (between 4 and 8 minutes) and then restart. There was nothing useful in the log. Even Snow Support said there wasn't much to go on... Obviously we tried the normal things, like rebooting the server.

Finally, we simply swapped out the executable from 6.5 back to 6.4 and restarted the service and everything has gone back to being fine again. It's really quite strange. If Snow have changed the way that AD functions in 6.5 then maybe there's a bug which happens in our environment, but not others.

It's good to know that AD is working on your 6.5 instance. Hopefully something will come to light that will explain what's happening with ours. Thanks again! David

  • UPDATE 2: after downgrading to SI 6.4, Snow Support asked us to try the upgrade to 6.5 again. This time it seems stable, at least it ran overnight without restarting. So if anybody else has this same problem, downgrading and then re-upgrading might be worth a try. Hopefully we'll have AD Discovery running stable on 6.5 now. Thanks everybody!

    • UPDATE 3: Unfortunately, 6.5 didn't remain stable. The problems came back, so we have switched back to 6.4 until there's some kind of solution. There's a thread over here showing what we see when we use Snow Inventory 6.5 to do AD Discovery - large spikes in CPU and memory.
