Capturing PC Builds

Is anyone capturing via discovery PCs’ Builds, and potentially other PCINFO-related information?  We have a department that is asking for this so that they can send updates/patches/etc to devices with specific builds rather than blasting the updates to all devices

  • Hi Steve,

Normally it would be recommend to have the snow agent installed as part of any build process so if you then want to then identify a machine say with a certain build image on it that image would need to have say a custom environment variable that the agent gathers.

You could then use that custom variable to auto connect machines to OU's or see the data manually in the Inventory SMACC views to determine patch/update deployment lists as needed.

  • Hello Steve,

my question to you is: what do you mean by "PC build" in your environment?

Assuming you use the Snow Inventory agent, as Joseph mentioned:

    • Information like manufacturer, model, Bios version, OS version etc. are in the system by default
    • reading certain registry keys can be added to the Agent config easily
    • reading additional information during agent scan can be done by adding PowerShell scripts

As you see - it always depends :-)

    Regards,

    Axel
