Does anyone else notice the wrong 'Product version (file)' marked as installed in 'Files per computer' report for the Chrome Windows application. Or other applications?

When running the 'Files per computer' report with a filter created for the application %chrome% and the field Installed added as extra column it shows the Chrome applications found for my own laptop and others. But it does mark the version 90.0 as installed while the actual installed version on my own computer is 90.0.4430.85 which is also shown.

Wrong 'Product version (file)' marked as installed in 'Files per computer' report for Chrome Windows version

This way the report is not really useable to provide to our security team since they

need the full version number of the actual installation to check for versions installed with know vulnerabilities.

Also for other applications this is happening e.g. the thunderbird browser. It looks

like the version shown as installed is the one rolled up to just one figure after the first dot. But to my opinion this is not correct?

Any ideas on this?

ps.: the Chrome (Mac) application file is marked correctly!!

Correct 'Product version (file)' marked as installed in 'Files per computer' report for Chrome (Mac) version

  • See the same, but it looks like this this report connects to raw inv data since you see kind of history of installations, then it is marked one line as the actual installed that has the major version. Anyway, a workaround suggestion. If you add the column Full version (file) and then filter on Installed = Yes, you get just the actual version installed per computer and with the full version as well

  • Yes I'm seeing the same thing Gert - interestingly the difference seems to be if the executable path has got any capital letters in it or not.....

    • Hi Adam,

I already created a case for this as well. Let’s see what support comes up with.

      regards,

      Gert-Jan

  • We had the same discussion as well with several customers. Even worse, sometimes Snow changes the reported version numbers. We had the issue with Citrix receiver, where the version changed from 4.9 to 4, leaving us with some additional challenges regarding Automation Platform services.

Full version number should be the solution here. If this has some gaps compared to Snow Inventory data, you could create a custom report that information from the SnowInventory database directly.

  • Oliver Berger (Flexera Software)

Hm, interesting. The report combines the data from tblcomputersoftware, where you can have IsInstalled 1 and 0 (for metering data) and tblcomputersoftwareinstalled (what includes also unrecognised software). The report itself is not very "smart".

So there could be changes to the physical file itself (unlikely in this case, but not impossible), changes how the Agent or 3rd party inventory reports the data in (could be validated in a snowpack but more complicated when more than one data source is reporting in per computer) or changes in the DUJ who transports the data between SI and SLM what you could compare with the actual applications on the computer in the Snow Inventory SMACC.

    Cheers Oliver
