Hit on Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 Enterprise

Hi,

We have 50-some "hits" on Visual Studio 2017 Enterprise. I understand that this is bundled software. The tab Bundled content gives me a clue on the components of the bundle. ALL say installs 0, users 0.

How can I determine where the "hits" come from? Do I need access to the SMACC for this?

Thanks

  • Is there anything between parenthesis? VS licensing in Snow is really not straightforward, look, we too show non compliant when we actually have enough licenses
      • What if you check any of the 51 users? Snow would tell what computer the application has been used on. From there, you could investigate if the application is properly detected and compare with the rules defined in your SLM Server from the SMACC.
        • All computers are VDI's. You are correct that I could investigate it by looking at the VDI and see what is installed there. But I was wondering if there is a way to investigate without that.
          • We could suggest ways to investigate but there are several possibilities. For example, it could be that all your users have been updated to a newer version of VS but the usage of version 2017 is still recorded in Snow and there is a license requirement until the metric period is over. Or maybe there is indeed an issue in what Snow records in your case. So as a start it would be best to make a shallow investigation and present your findings here. Then we would be able to save time and help you in the right direction

  • Thanks. From what I understand now, is that the tab "Bundle Content" contains all the components that the Application bundle can consist of. If one of these components is installed / used, then it should show in this "bundle content" overview. If everything is zero, no license requirement should be shown. Can someone confirm that this is correct? Or could compliance come from something else than the components? If so, I will dismiss this until we have done the upgrade (still working on old version). Thanks Paul

    • Hi Paul, Let me help you clarify this a bit the tab "Bundle Content" contains all the components that the Application bundle can consist of True If everything is zero, no license requirement should be shown Incorrect. The compliance figures are also based on other parameters. Here are a few: usage data (also called metering data in Snow), pre-recognized applications and metrics can influence the license requirement even when the application is not installed. E.g.: You can have an application that is not showing as installed on the computer but still showing uage data (maybe the app is run from a USB stick, from a network drive or the app has been uninstalled recently)

  • Hello Samuel, yes, the usage of old version in Snow stays in there until it reaches the configured days until expiry (90 days?). But your screen looks like a upgrade/downgrade & metric issue, basically VS is user based license, so installations do not play any role. but users do! a) First of all check allocation , if the "-6" license requirement comes from another version in same metric (and you have turned on downgrade to all old versions in the application?). Maybe there is a app requiring a license not part of VS Ent 2017, but 2015? b) The licenses are probably on another version as well like VE Ent 2015 or 2019 "Licenses 0" and the metric is different or "upgrades" are not turned on), so your existing license are not configured to cover VS 2017 Ent. I recommend to Upgrade all licenses to the latest release, cause Downgrade works, Upgrade mostly not. c) These SQL Prompt installations are not used by any users. Therefore the license requirement VS 2017 Ent is Zero. So your screenshoot make sense to me, but is subject to further investigation. Fine tune SLM and it will work :-)

    • Hi Bjorn, Thanks! but it is Paul hgaving the issue, not me The ponits you mention are good points! I agree that a screenshot of the Compliance tab and th eLicense tab including the "Transfers" sub-tab would be beneficial to fully understand. But this data is not always easy to share. Paul, if you feel you can share more of the background (hide what you want to keep confidential), it would be a great help!
