TS-' Application Calculation Mismatch

Hi Guys,

The compliance position report generated on the SNOW platform is very confusing when it comes to 'TS-' applications. It appears some machines have both TS and non-TS versions installed when they do not. It's making understand compliance very difficult.

For example:

Terminal Server 1 has installed:

1 x 'Office Professional Plus 2010'

Terminal Server 1 SNOW reports as:

1 x 'Office Professional Plus 2010'

1 x 'TS-Office Professional Plus 2010'

Terminal Server 2 has installed:

1 x 'Office Professional Plus 2010'

Terminal Server 2 SNOW reports as:

1 x 'Office Professional Plus 2010'

If the discrepancy was always with 'TS-' applications, then I can just ignore those lines, but as the discrepancies are unpredictable I do not know how to handle them.

Can anyone help?

Hi, I did not read the whole string, but when a application is connected by any means by remote desktop snow will display it as TS-. From the license point off view many vendors say you dont have to count the installations on server but the end devices that connect to that application then. So if office is running as TS-, then first you have to set the application count to total devices instead off instalation. Then you have to look at those devices and see if they wont run the application also localy, if this is the case just count the devices a 1 license needed. If the have it localy and on ts then also count it as one. So the applications Always counts a one.

  Hello Steven, isnt the default setting of all "TS-" applications in SLM "per Device"? Unfortunately Snow licenses autoassign works only with "licenced by installation". So in a big environment manual assignment of devices licenses is a big hazzle. There I would prefer a better autoassigment in Snow or other smart solutions. I did no fully understand Duncans Ruud Hartog idea of "the RDP Settings to point to the non-TS version of the application with secondary use rights enabled" , what does this mean? For the most used TS application we also have user licenses, which have the same issue, than device license (no autoassign).

    Hi Bjorn, Its Ruud's suggestion on the RDP setting. Mine was to create a bundle with both TS and Non-TS version of the application in, then assign the licenses you have purchased to the Bundle rather than either or the application types. Eg: I have application X, with 2 registered user: one "Application X" and one on "TS-Application X" I create a bundle in SnowMACC SRS called "Application X Suite" and added both "Application X" and "TS-Application X" to the bundle, neither are set as mandatory. I have purchased 2 users licenses, so added these licenses to Snow and selected the assigned application "Application X Suite" to this license. Hope that make sense? Duncan

    Hello Duncan, sorry for mixing up with Ruud. I understood your approach, but your workaround faces the same "assignment challenge" than in other solution with your bundle workaround, if you swich to device license for both. Therefore I would prefer other solution which allows to keep in control of the licensed amount. Actually Snow is able to handle applications different by license, but not able to subassign license to other application or metric. So faar matching licenses with scan results to archive compliance is always a challenge.

I also found the same issue in my Customer Environment. There showing the same issue where terminal service was not there but still there showing 'TS' prefix before many applications. Also I seen there, 'TS' prefix showing along with Snow Inventory Agent. Please any one have the idea why it's happening. By this, critical impact seen on Compliance Summary.

  Hi There, Maybe my explanation wasnt good enough. Lets look at a specific example. (Sorry I cant share screen shots as it has our data on it) I picked an application called TS-Snow Management and Configuration Centre from our all applications list. I open up the application On the Computers tab I can see that it is "hosted" on my Snow Application Server. On the Users tab, I can see the users who have accessed this program remotely (i.e. they stared the application probably using the command \\servername\application) On the Devices tab, I can see the computers that used this application So for this example, we are not using terminal services, but we are starting an application from a server remotely without installing it localy on our laptops, so this shows up as TS- before the application name so we can see it is being used remotely.

    Thanks for the info Mark, I understand what you are trying to say. In our environment, it is highly unlikely someone is running the software remotely like that. I don't even know if that would work? I think there might be something I don't understand around how SNOW is understanding the 'TS-' applications. Do you know if there is any documentation explaining how worked it out? I don't really know how to move forward with this problem, maybe I need to raise a support ticket?

    Hi Josh, You could try this, it is the wite paper for virtual environments and it has a section on terminal services applications, you will need a support portal login to access it. https://snowprod.service-now.com/kb_view.do?sysparm_article=KB0011931 But if you have specific issues, then it is probably best to log a support call so they can run through the exact scenario you are seeing. Please post back here if you find the issue and solution as it may help other people in the future

    I have also been wondering about this. I sent the list of TS- Applications to the XenApp team and they stated there is no way all those are published apps. I am trying to figure out where I see where they are being accessed from, meaning the Server name/XenApp farm, etc. That would help run down why people are accessing it from a server and also have it installed locally, or should have it installed locally. Is there someplace to see where the TS app is being run from? Thanks,
